[Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, Australia.] Two box files of scholarly material assembled by the botanist P. S. Green of Kew Gardens during a Royal Society and Percy Sladen Expedition, including botanical lists, offprints and correspondence.
According to his obituary in the 'Kew Bulletin' (2010), Green worked '[a]lmost singlehandedly' on the account of the two islands for the 'Flora of Australia'. This collection of around 100 items contains material relating to that work, largely assembled on the spot during a Royal Society and Percy Sladen Expedition, and including correspondence with a number of experts in the field. (For list of correspondents see below.) The collection is in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in matching worn red box files. Among 16 typed botanical lists included in the collection are: 'List of names that have been applied to Norfolk & Lord Howe Island vascular plants' (headed 'Provisional') by 'P. S. Green | Nov. 1967'. 40pp., 8vo. Rodd, 6 October 1975; '[Norfolk and Philip Islands] List of threatened plants' (4pp., 8vo); 'R. M. Laing's collection at Botany Bay, Christchurch' (2pp., foolscap 8vo); lists of specimens collected on Norfolk Island between 1950 and 1971 by F. C. Allen, H. Bannister, R. J. Chinnock and W. R. Sykes (totalling 18pp., foolscap 8vo); 'Checklist of Lord Howe Island Angiosperms' by A. N. Rodd (13pp. ,foolscap 8vo, duplicated). Also present are a two typed drafts of an article by Green and Holloway, 'Environmental problems facing Norfolk Island', one with manuscript emendations, and a duplicated typed report ('not for publication or citation') by J. Pickard, titled 'Notes to accompany vegetation map of Lord Howe Island' (16pp., 8vo). Also present are several pages of carbons of Green's typed dated labels for specimens sent back by him from the two islands to Kew Gardens, and 47 items of incoming correspondence, with 22 carbon copies of typed letters by Green, including letters from and to: Donald McGillivray (1935-2012), John Pickard and A.
