Around 130 items of ephemera relating to Harry Houdini, including a recording of his wife's last seance for him in 1936, 41 magazine articles, photographs, postcards, catalogues, cuttings, facsimiles.
A fascinating archive, reflecting Houdini's immense iconic status. The collection is in good condition, with only a few items showing signs of aging, such as a handful of magazines with loose covers or other pages. Apart from two items (described first below) the collection is divided into two parts, A and B: Part A comprises general Houdini ephemera, and Part B magazines featuring Houdini, 1909-1997. The first of the two odd items is a reel of tape (with cd of same) featuring a twenty-minute recording of Bess Houdini's last seance for her husband, with Dr Edward Saint, on the roof of the Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel, on the tenth anniversary of Houdini's death, 31 October 1936, described on the tape as 'the greatest attempt to pierce the unknown and form a spirit contact ever conceived by mortal man'. Also present on the tape is a twenty-five minute recording of an episode of the radio show 'The Master Mentalist Dunninger'. Both seance and radio show are divided into two parts. The tape also contains a two-minute passage by the collector, describing how the tape was obtained for him by Thomas K. Horbecker, and is now in 'my collection of Houdiniana which includes personal letters, photographs and a great deal of scarce Houdini material'. The second of the two odd items is an undated (1920s?) programme for a performance at Parson's Theatre [Hartford, Connecticut] ('5 DAYS [...] L. LAWRENCE WEBER PRESENTS HOUDINI. "The Greatest Necromancer of the Age - Perhaps of all times." - The Literary Digest.') On one side of a piece of cream paper, 34 x 14 cm. The programme contains a deal of small type under a variety of headings including 'PALIGENESIA', 'DO THE DEAD COME BACK?', 'THE MARGERY TEST EXPLAINED' and 'HOUDINI'S $10,000 CHALLENGE' (with sticker stating that the item is 'Original Magic Memorabilia from the Temple Collection').
