Printed 'Copy of an Order in Council dated 16th November 1827, relative to the Protection of the Trading Vessels of this Country from Greek Pirates', with autograph signature of Charles Andrew Scovell.
1p., folio. On laid paper, watermarked 'CLARKE AND HORSINGTON 1825'. Disbound. Fair, on lighly-aged paper with creasing to the top outer corner. The central part of the page carries the 39-line Order in Council, signed in type by C. C. Greville, and headed 'AT THE COURT OF ST. JAMES'S, | The 16th Day of November, 1827, | PRESENT, | The King's Most Excellent Majesty in Council:'. The Order begins by describing how 'the Depredations which have for some time been committed upon the Commerce of His Majesty's Subjects in the Mediterranean Seas, by armed Vessels piratically cruizing under the Greek Flag, have of late greatly encreased, and have been accompanied with Acts of Cruelty and Barbarity which have rendered the Navigation of those Seas highly perilous'. The Royal Navy will be employed 'to prevent, so far as possible, any armed Vessels bearing the Greek Flag from putting to Sea', with the exception of those of the Greek government, 'until some Government shall be established in Greece competent to put a stop to all Irregularities of the nature complained of'. Above the Order is a copy of a three-line covering letter by T. Frankland Lewis, Commissioners Customs, Treasury Chambers, dated 5 December 1827; and beneath the Order is the following, with the autograph signature of 'C. Scovell', and the word 'Weymouth' added in manuscript: 'CUSTOM-HOUSE, LONDON, | 10th December, 1827. | THE aforegoing Copy of a Letter from Mr. Frankland Lewis, (One of the Secretaries to the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury) together with Copy of the Order in Council therein referred to, is transmitted to the Collector and Comptroller at [Weymouth] for their Information. | By Order of the Commissioners, | [signed 'C. Scovell']. Scarce: not listed on COPAC under the names of Lewis, Greville or Scovell.
