ALS and TLS, the TLS, on letterhead of 24 York Terrace, Regents Park, London; 3 October 1921; ALS, on letterhead of Brackenburn, Manesty Park, Keswick; 8 July 1930, 4pp., 12mo. A significant letter (TLS), relating to the formation of the PEN Club. 'Dear Mr. Lynd, | Several people who are interested in the business of books, including Mr. J. D. Beresford, Mr. Sidney Pawling, Mr. St. John Ervine, Mr. J. G. Wilson, Mr. Cecil Palmer and Mr. John Drinkwater, are inclined to think that it would be useful to have some sort of society in which authors, publishers, booksellers, librarians and critics could meet and discuss matters of interest to all of them. [...] I am inviting a number of representative people to my house, 24 York Terrace, Regents Park, on Thursday evening, October 20th, at 8 p.m. to talk about the proposal, and I shall be very glad if you will join us.' ALS, Addressed to 'My dear Robert'. He thanks him for his 'charming words to me in John O'London. What a delightful thing to find actually on landing at Harwich, the best greeting I think I have ever had. I don't think that you could have been kinder and it is true that affirmative criticism is better than destructive. So say all of us anyway!'
