Twelve Manuscript items relating to the Twining family, including letters from the tea merchant Richard Twining and his sons Richard and Thomas, a receipt from Simon Schram, a pencil portrait, an original poem, a family tree.
The twelve items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. They probably derive from Richard Twining (1807-1906), editor of 'Selections from the Papers of the Twining Family' (1887). ONE: Autograph Letter Signed, in a very shaky hand, from Rev. Thomas Twining, 'ffor Mr. Thomas Twining at the golden Lyon in Davaraux [sic] Court by Temple Barr | London | [signed] Frank Williamson'. [1717.] Postscript: 'I beg you because I have not Leisure now to write to him, to wait on Mr Hen. Horton of Elm-court in the Temple so soon as possible, and let him know I am much obligd to him for his Letter, & if I am not mistaken, Mr Raymond is more'. Wrapped in folio leaf, which is docketed: '(1717) | 3 Lres [Letters] from Rev Thos Twining, Wilts to Mr Thos Twining at the Golden Lion in Devereux Cout near the Temple'. TWO: Manuscript letter to Richard Twining senior from his brother 'Daniel'. Norwich. 25 August 1784. 1p., landscape 12mo. 'Old Mr Bagg has given me worsted enough on a bobbin for a new ball, and the young one says my last copy was the best, and that if I go on as fast till I am sixty years old I shall write the best hand in the family'. THREE: Manuscript copies from three letters on one page, headed 'Extract from a Lre [Letter] from R T. to his Brother The Revd. T. T. July 9. 1781: who was at Emsley.' Also 'Extract from a Lre from R. J. to his Brother The Revd T. T. April 1. 1789', and extract dated 'Novr 18. 1819'. 1p., 4to. Docketed 'Copied | good K Geo. 3rd & St Paul's 1781'. FOUR: Autograph Letter Signed from Richard Twining senior to his son Richard Twining junior. Isleworth. 25 September 1816. Begins with poem: 'My dear Richard | Your Willing Fish | Proved an excellent Dish. | Health & thanks in cool wine, | From the Banks of the Rhine | What comfort in truth | To my age is your youth. | I pray
to shed | It's [sic] rewards on your head. | My love to Georgey | to whose name I can find no rhime [sic] but the old one of porgey - No fish tomorrow. If I should live till Friday you may try your luck again at Willow's - anything that suits. - Yr. affte. Father | R T -'. 1p., landscape 12mo. Autograph Note Signed ('A. T.') on reverse from Richard junior's sister. FIVE: Autograph Receipt Signed by 'Simon Schram'. On slip of paper. Reads: '1824 June 4th. Recd. of Rd. Twinings [sic] Esqr. the Sum of Thirty one Pounds, ten Shillings, for a Violoncello, Case & a Bow. | Simon Schram'. SIX: Autograph Letter Signed ('Th') to Richard Twining junior from his brother Thomas Twining. Spring Grove. 27 January 1827. 2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed, with black wax seal, on reverse of second leaf. Expressing pleasure at a visit from 'Aldred & William'. SEVEN: Autograph Letter to Richard Twining, docketed 'T. T's remarks upon some remarks of R. T. upon Mr Harris.' 3pp., 4to. EIGHT: Autograph Letter Signed ('T. T.') to Richard Twining junior, from his brother Thomas Twining. 23 June 1831. 1p., 12mo. On pink paper. 'My dear Richard, | I must beg you to express, for I cannot, my farewell [last two words deleted] mes derniers adieux, mes voeux les plus sincères, ma profonde reconnaissance. | You will find me at the Inn.' NINE: Manuscript copy, headed: 'T: T: in a letter dated, Unterseen, Augt 25 : 31 [1831] gives an interesting detail of flood in that neighbourhood.' 3pp., 4to. Describing how, 'after a heavy fall of rain on the day & night of the 8th & morning of the 9th. the water rush'd down from the mountains with prodigious violence swelling all the Torrents in a frightful manner'. TEN: Copy of manuscript letter from 'R. T.' to 'The Revd Dr Gray, Bishop Wearmouth'. 1p., 12mo. ELEVEN: Undated manuscript memoranda, including family tree. 1p, 4to. Without place or date. TWELVE: Pencil portrait drawing, dated in bottom left-hand corner '1795', showing a man in eighteenth-century dress [Richard Twining senior?] reading a newspaper, bottles of 'WHITE', 'PORT' and 'SH[ERRY].' before him.
