['Richard Marsh' [Richard Bernard Heldmann], Victorian supernatural author.] Four Autograph Letters Signed (all 'Richard Marsh') to 'A. Anderson Esq.', regarding term and payment for contributions to his magazine, including 'Aunt Jane's Jalap'.
All four items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE (8 October 1908): 'Although I am only asking what I am offered elsewhere I am willing to meet you, & to accept Twenty five Guineas for the second serial use of the two stories, - on the understanding that the transaction is for prompt cash.' TWO (16 February 1909): His terms are fifteen guineas, cash. 'If you are not in a position to pay that modest sum for what I to all intents & purposes a brand new story, & a good one, I can only regret it; I do not propose to cheapen my work.' He concludes by requesting that the story be returned 'as I sent it, - flat, in a square envelope; not folded, in an oblong one'. THREE (1 September 1909): As Anderson has held on to his three stories for more than a month, he assumes he is going to use them, and requests a cheque. FOUR (3 September 1909): 'I find your note a little surprizing, considering that the stories have been in your office five weeks. So far as your readers are concerned "Aunt Jane's Jalap" is a new story, & a good one. £15.15 is the price i receive from your competitors for such matter, & the lowest I can accept.'
