[Thomson Hankey, merchant banker.] Manuscript memorandum book, begun by Thomson Hankey, containing accounts and memoranda directly relating to the Hankey banking family and their interests in the West Indies, with details of various estates.
63pp., foolscap 8vo. Stitched. In ruled 31.5 x 20 cm notebook with original marbled card wraps. Begun from both ends, with 40pp starting at one end and 23pp at the other. Internally in fair condition, on aged and worn paper; in damaged wraps with loss at foot of one cover, and to a printed item laid down inside it. The volume contains sixteen pages of double-entry family accounts, dated from 30 June 1864 to 31 September 1890. These begin with details of 'Cash at Bankers', 'Cash [at Alexanders]', 'Investments', 'Ships', 'West India Accounts', and later feature 'Merchandize' and loans. One end begins with a list of 'Proprietors of Grand Bras Estate' and 'Proprietors of the Simond & Hankey Estates'. Among the headings are: 'Public of Jamaica - Immigration Account'; 'Thomas Morley Blaney Esq. | Craignish Estate, Trinidad' (financial details); 'Cornwall Estate - Crop 1861'; 'Bluecastle Estate - Crop 1862'; 'Mem. shewing the returns from the Ships' (1857-1862); 'J. F. G. Danvers'; 'Alexander Cunliffe & Co 27 Sept. 1864'; 'Grenada Estimates for Crop 1865'; 'Elim Estate, Jamaica'; 'Interest on Money at Call on £100'; 'Willoughby Trevelyan decd'; 'Mem. of Deeds sent to A. P. Marryat per registered Book Post 15/1/74'; 'Duty on Sugar - on & after 1 May 1867'; 'Rent Charge on Beausejour Estate'. Eighteen pages carry brief memoranda between 1888 and 1977, at first recording the completion of the posting of the quarterly ledger, and from 1936 recording trial and final balances, but between 1925 and 1937 carrying more detail, with entries such as '[10 January 1935] Mr C. W. Gurney sailed for Jamaica s/s "Rangitiki".' There is also a separate page listing journeys by members of the family to the West Indies between 1936 and 1947, giving the destination and mode of transport. A number of memoranda are inserted in the volume, including accounts (2pp., foolscap 8vo), headed 'L. C. Shirley', dated 11 September 1862.
