[ Rev. Dr. Richard Frederick Littledale. ] Autograph Letter Signed ('R. F. Littledale') regarding theological textbooks, and his desire to write a book on Moral Theology.
2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly aged and spotted paper. Written in a close and difficult hand. He begins by apologising for a mistake in his 'account of St Bees', before turning to a paper by him, which he states - adding 'This is private.' - has been corrected by the Dean of St Pauls and Bishop of Truro. He discusses existing text books for theological and clerical subjects, praising R. Denny Urlin's 'Legal Guide for the Clergy', 'which packs into ninety pages of large type all that the ordinary curate need know'. He discusses 'a book on Moral Theology' he is thinking of doing 'some day'. He can 'take credit for one thing': fifteen years before he drew up 'the Notes on Confession and Direction in the Priests Prayer Book which has now gone through five editions', and 'no Puritan lecturer hhas been able to extract anything out of them <?> to make mischief, though I said all I wanted to say'. He hopes he may be 'equally fortunate', if he should turn to Moral Theology. The letter ends with a comment on 'Dr Pusey'.
