Hallam, Henry 1777-1859, historian (DNB). He welcomes the gift of "the Octavo Edition of [his] valuable Reports on the M.S.S. in some of our libraries" [presumably ‘Three Catalogues describing the Contents of the Red Book of the Exchequer, of the Dodsworth Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, and of the Manuscripts in the Library of Lincoln's Inn,’ London, 1838, 8vo.] They are not relevant to his current work [presumably ‘The Introduction to the Literature of Europe during the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries,’ published in 1837-1839] since he is "forced to exclude historical literature" to avoid creating too many volumes. He admires the memoir of Dodsworth and comments. He claims he cannot penetrate a "hint" in the Preface ("far be it from me to think that I can threasd all the mazes of literary history").
