Millwall Docks Co
A small archive of material relating to the Millwall Dock Co and the Manchester Ship Canal. George Hazlehurst, whose papers these are, worked several years in Manchester and climbed the ladder at Millwall, eventually becoming General Manager (1909). The archive includes: the Act entitled London and India Docks and Millwall Dock Companies (annotated in Hazlehurst's had); a copy letter to Winston Churchill, 3pp., 4to, dfrom Hazlehurst describing his abilities and achievemnts, 7 July 1908; copy application, 5pp., 4to, incl. excerpts from reports, for the General Managership of Millwall Docks; copy references from the (late) Chairman of the Dock Co.; (Accountants) "Preliminary Notes on the Proposed New System of Book-keeping" at the Docks, analysing Hazehurst's plans, 8pp., fol., with a further 7pp., fol. (1900) on the system of issuing and paying bills. And: Instructions to Hazlehurst as The Dock Traffic Superintendent, The Manchester Ship Canal for disembarking the first American troops for the First World War, via the Manchester Ship Canal (H.M.S. City of Calcutta corrected from City of Exeter), corrected in manuscript, 2pp. fol. And; Hazlehurst's renewal contract (1923 on)with the Manchester Ship as Dock Traffic Supervisor (first appointed 1917); letter confirming Hazlehurst's leaving the Canal Company, with detail of payments, etc.
