Printed Ephemera

The volume contains proofs of Walker's contributions to various periodicals, with other items by Walker. WITH letters/text/drawings (details below) by Thackeray relating to his The Adventures of Philip (Cornhill Magazine, 1861-2, serial), with relevant proofs.Marks states in his introductory comment to his "List of Illustrations" that "Those [illustrations] against which no owner's name appears have been supplied by the author." On that basis, several illustrations in this album belong to Marks's own collection (eg.

Both prints black and white, and in good condition. The portrait shot is 14 x 9.5 cm, on grey card backing, within a 30.5 x 20.5 cm folder of the same grey card, printed with the name and address of the firm. The image depicts the head and shoulders of a moustachioed Hall, who is glancing to his left side with a faraway look in his eyes, while smartly dressed in dark jacket and waistcoat.

Attended by 44 million people, the New York World's Fair was an enormous enterprise, with a vast number of exhibits and pavilions from all over the world spread out over 1216 acres of the Flushing Meadows/Corona Park district. The fair's official 'theme' was 'the demonstration of "a happier way of American living through a recognition of the interdependence of man, and the building of a better world of tomorrow with the tools of today"'.

A powerful and evocative artefact, and a decided museum piece, mainly centring on the year 1980 and 1981, significant years in the movement's history, with a quarter of a million people marched through central London in support of CND in 1981. The collection includes a copy of the 1980 government pamphlet 'Protect and Survive', and E. P. Thompson's celebrated riposte of the same year, 'Protest and Survive'. The collection is in fair condition, with signs of age and wear which enhance rather than detract from its impact.

Four pages, 8vo, not bound as issued, poor quality paper, dulled, very small closed tears at bottom, fold mark, mainly good condition. Presumably a translation for Italian consumption  and dropped on Italian soil from a plane! One copy ONLY listed on COPAC and WorldCat (only the title given on IWM website, no description).

Lumb Stocks was, as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography points out, 'one of the most influential exponents of steel line engraving, and his death left the Royal Academy without an engraver in its ranks'. He bequeathed his collection of prints to the British Museum;; the present collection was retained by the family, and purchased from the estate of Harold Carpenter Lumb Stocks (1884-1956), organist of St Asaph Cathedral.

1p., 12mo. Attractively printed within a decorative border, on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir | The Specimen Book sent you herewith, of which I have much pleasure in asking your acceptance, contains a history of the Caslon Foundry printed with the justly celebrated types engraved by its founder in the early part of last Century.

The text is engraved in copperplate on one side of a piece of card, with plan on reverse of the the premises at 18 Paternoster Square, with Newgate Street, Warwick Lane, Rose Street and Paternoster Row also shown. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with unobtrusive vertical crease. A nice piece of nineteenth-century London book trade ephemera. The text reads: 'Publication Committee | Presbyterian Church of England, | 18 Paternoster Square.

Label, irregular oval, dims.c/ 9 x 6cm, laid down on slightly larger (rectangular) piece of paper, glue showing through in patches, text clear and complete, "G. Dyer | Begs to acquaint hid Freiends | That he in tends, in future,to purchase | LIBRARIES and PARCELS of | BOOKS for SALE, and will be thankful | for their recommendation. | *** Books may also be exchanged. | Library, Exeter, Sept. 4th, 1787." BBTI lists a Gilbert Dyer, 1783-1820, as well as a G. Dyer, 1790 as owners of circulating libraries, and the former as a bookseller. Presumably the same chap.

Bookplate, c.8 x 14cm, marks show it was tipped onto an album page once, ow good. Image of Virgil's head. 3cm diameter, followed by calligraphic "This Book | is to be sold at the Shop of | Abraham Vandenhoek | AND | George Richmond. | the sign of Virgill's Head. | Opposite Exeter Exchange in the | STRAND."

Bookplate, c.17 x 10cm, stained, three letters of address obscured by wear, otherwiswe text clear, mainly good condition. "GARDINER, | Bookseller [...] | and | Bookbinder [...address] Where books are lent to read | at | Twelve Shillings per year [...] || BOOKS BOUGHT, SOLD, OR EXCHANGED || ENGRAVING | and | Copper-plate and Letter-Press | Printing, [...] || New Books, Reviews, Magazines, Pamphlets, [P]lays, &c. | added as soon as published." Note: a Sarah Gardiner of 20 Princes Street exhibited at the RA in 1815.

Trade card, apparently unrecorded, c.6.5 x 5cm, good condition. Text, "Trewman & Son | Printers, Stationers, | Booksellers & Binders. | Fore Street | EXETER || [minuscule] Ezekial, Exon."

The pamphlet is printed on both sides of a piece of 15.5 x 31 cm paper, which folds up to make sixpanels, each roughly 15.5 x 7.5 cm, and one double panel, 15.5 x 15 cm. The two maps are on the outer covers, and are coloured green and brown. The front cover carries the 'Map of the States | Missouri and Arkansas', with the caption 'Good Lands in a mild Climate | Are Sold very Cheaply on Ten Years' Payments.' On the back cover is a map of the United States of America, with the caption: 'Showing the Great Rivers and the many Railroads centering at the City of St.

In its obituary of Prunella Stack the Guardian describes the League as 'the most innocuous of the interwar mass fitness movements': the present item would indicate otherwise. The prospectus is printed on both sides of a 25 x 31 cm. piece of shiny art paper, irregularly folded to make a 25 x 15 cm. front cover, flanked by two 25 x 7.5 cm flaps (with the front of one listing the members of the committee, and of the other the League's rules).

On one side of a piece of 15 x 17 cm paper. In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper. The illustration is roughly 10.5 x 16 cm, and shows a bearded oriental warrior, with plumed headpiece, spear and knife in belt, leading an oversized horse. The disproportionate nature of the composition suggests that the male figure was added to the existing illustration of the horse.

On one side of piece of 41 x 20.5 cm paper, with lines and indications in light and dark blue, red and green. In fair condition, on aged paper, with creasing and one closed tear towards the head. The map has Trafalgar Square at its head (with the note that the two 'Basins' carry '40,000 Galls. each') and Parliament Square at its foot. Whitehall and Parliament Street connect the two on the right of the map, and to the left of the map is the lake in St James's Park: '200000 Galls Underground Tank | Pumping Station 1400 Galls | Pump | 15 foot Gravity Main from Serpentine'.

Five items, 1-26pp., folio, most undated, but one 1964, another 1965, staples rusty, minor damage to one with no loss. The black and white photograph is 24 x 19 cm, and is laid down on a 36.5 x 28 cm mount. The photograph is in good condition, on lightly-aged matte paper; the mount is brittle, chipped and discoloured, with closed tears and a detached corner reattached on reverse with archival tape. Facsimile signature in bottom right-hand corner of mount: 'Yours sincerely | R. M. Ballantyne'. On reverse, in contemporary hand: 'R. M. B. about 1893' (although the photograph does not look as if it dates from the year before Ballantyne's death), and at head of reverse, in the same hand: 'R. M.

The 40 items range in size from 25 x 19cm to 5 x 4.5cm. All in good condition, lightly-aged, and all but five laid down on the grey paper leaves of a heavily-worn album, with back cover loose, and with ownership signature of Sir Michael's wife Elisabeth Clapham at head of first page. The couple married in 1935, and one of the 40 items is a card with text in red featuring Elisabeth's maiden name. It conveys 'Good wishes for Christmas & the New Year from Elisabeth Rea | 6 Barton Street, S.W.1'.

In addition to his pioneering cinematographic work, Herkomer was a theatrical innovator. As Lynda Nead points out in her 'The Haunted Gallery' (Yale, 2007), it was shortly after the opening of his art school that 'he and his students created an auditorium, modelled on Wagner's Festspielhaus in Bayreuth, for public performances of plays, written, directed and, indeed, performed by Herkomer'. 1p., 12mo. On 24.5 x 18.5 cm. piece of thin wove paper. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper with damage to extremities. A scarce and intriguing survival, about which nothing has hitherto been discovered. Printed in heavy black type characteristic of the early nineteenth century.

2pp., 4to. On a single leaf, both sides of which are headed 'Répertoire Lecombe'. Printer's slug at foot of 'Verdun on ne passe pas!' Both lyrics printed in two columns (no score to either). In good condition, on aged and worn high-acidity paper. 'Ce sont les Yeux' begins: 'Chacun dans la vie cherche son idéal.' The 'Dernier Refrain' reads: 'Et bien des yeux de mère, | Sont tournés vers la frontière | Où là-bas leurs chers petits enfants | Pour sauver la France donnent leur sang.

1p., 12mo. Text enclosed within a decorative border. In fair condition, on heavily aged and worn wove paper, with a couple of small holes. Printed on cheap paper, with rough untrimmed edges. Beneath the title is a poem in two columns, itself titled 'Directions for Reading it.': 'Hast thou no pity on my woes? | Dost thou at me turn up thy nose? | I'll make my declaration first, | So read straight forward and be curst. | But if thy heart to me incline, | O!

The Bristol Aeroplane Company was an early and important innovator in the field of aircraft design and development. Four variants of its Titan engine (I, IIF, II Special, and IV) were produced in 1928. The present brochure and photographs are contained in a large manila envelope, with 'The "Bristol" Aeroplanes' printed in green on front. The photographs are all in very good condition, and all measure around 18 x 23.5 cm. The brochure is 4pp., 4to, printed in brown on a bifolium of cream paper. It is in good condition, with a little wear and creasing.

2pp., 4to. On first leaf of a bifolium, with reverse of second leaf addressed (with postmarks) to 'The Relieving Officers | Basingstoke Union | Hants'. In good condition, on aged paper. The document carries the signature of 'Wm.

3pp., folio. On two loose leaves, each with one torn edge. The blank reverse of the second leaf is addressed in manuscript to 'The Bank of Scotland, | Edinbr', with two postmarks and pencil docketting. The heading is followed by a long list of those present, beginning with 'Mr THOMAS MILLAR, for the Incorporation of Skinners and Furriers' and ending with 'ALEXANDER WRIGHT, Esq. chose Preses'. There follows a minute of the meeting by 'ALEX.

The form is 1p., landscape folio (43.5 x 33.5 cm.), printed on a piece of C. de Liagre et Cie laid paper with bell watermark. It is folded so as to make the central opening of a bifolium, with the following on the front cover: 'Administration des Chemins de Fer en Exploitation.

1p.,12mo. Fifty-three lines of small type. Good, on lightly-aged and ruckled paper, with traces of mount on blank reverse. The item begins: 'MR. PUNCH is accustomed to receive letter and treaties, imploring him not to call homoeopathy fudge, and some of them attempting to assign reasons why he should not. In all these communications, the medical opponents of homoepathy are called "allopathists."' Later on the author comments: 'PROFESSOR HOLLOWAY is perhaps an allopathist; however he does not tell us on what principle his pills and ointments cure all diseases.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper with traces of previous mount. The nineteen rules begin with 'RULE I. | That this Society be called the Reading Pathological Society.' They end with 'RULE XIX. | That the Society be empoweredd to act at ordinary meetings, on any matters not comprehended in these rules, and that new rules may be added, or old ones modified, notice having been given at the previous meeting, but that such rules be submitted to the next Annual Meeting.' 1p., 12mo. On trimmed wove paper. Aged and worn, with traces of mount on reverse. 24 lines, arranged in six four-line stanzas, beneath the title 'New Version to an Old Nursery Rhyme.' The poem - based on 'Sing a song of sixpence' - begins: 'Sing a song of Thousand Guineas, | Pockets full of brass; | Rate-payer's money's nought to me, | I'll squander it like an ass. | Sing a song of Royal Visit, | Ain't I a man of sense | To shake hands and sit with Royalty, | At Rate-payers expence.
