QUESTIONS AS TO SIR WILLIAM FETTES' TRUST.
Sir William Fettes died in 1836, and the school endowed by him opened in 1870. Small handbill, dimensions approximately 8 inches by 5 inches, on 'ANNANDALE SUPERFINE' laid paper. In good condition overall, but slightly discoloured and grubby. Three pertinent questions. Question one: considering the fact that Fettes left 'about Half a Million of money, to form an "Endowment for the Maintenance, Education, and Outfit" of Poor Children from all parts of Scotland', 'Do you approve of upwards of £230,000 of the money having been spent in the erection of buildings for the education of gentlemen's sons?' Second question: 'would you approve of a new Scheme which would continue the administration on almost the same lines?', considering the fact that 'only 129 Boys and no Girls have derived the benefits of the charity during the last fourteen years'. Last question: 'Should such a Scheme be laid before Parliament, would you vote for a motion rejecting it, and instructing the Educational Endowments Commissioners to frame a Scheme which would have regard to the spirit of the founder's intentions?'
