English writer (1866-1945). The letter is 2 pages, 8vo, and the notes are 9 pages octavo. Neatly written on one side each of eleven matching leaves, all ruled with blue lines. In good condition overall, but with the paper somewhat discoloured, creased and ruckled, and with some rust stains from a paper clip and closed tears. He is sending as promised 'the evidence of the bishop's mitre having come down to us from very ancient times'. Small tracing (around 2 inches square) attached to first leaf of letter, and large tracing (around 8 inches by 4 inches) 'from an Assyrian bas-relief' at beginning of notes. Two small photographs (around 2 inches by 3 inches), one of them of 'Exorcising Demons of Disease'. In the letter Lane explains how 'In the exorcising ceremony [...] the fish extends to the priest-physicians feet. I expect the fish scales were gilt, the better to overawe the patient. The fins & scales have gone and are represented by theh two white streamers which are attached to theh mitre and hang down over the shoulders.' The latter part of the letter discusses a book by Bernard Shaw sent to him by Lady Watney. 'I have read it very carefully and all is true according to his showing but there is a spiritual side which one cannot prove by the material. Bernard Shaw like Huxley can argue and beat you every time in argument but it is not convincing.' The notes consist of transcripts from C. J. Gadd and Sir E. Wallis Budge.
