Autograph Signature.
First Chief Justice of Nova Scotia (1710-76). Flyleaf detached from octavo volume and neatly mounted on piece of white card, itself mounted on larger piece of grey card. While the mounts are in good condition the leaf itself is poor, discoloured and stained. Reads in top left-hand corner 'Jonathn Belcher | August. 1754.' Also present are signatures of 'Hawkins | London' and 'Jn L. Lee | 1870'. Typed note at foot of leaf reads: 'Autograph of "Colin Campbell" on other side of this fly leaf.' Campbell's signature is pasted to white card, but may become visible through expert detachment of leaf from mount. A printed note reads 'Colin Campbell, a later owner of the volume, whose autograph appears on the end-paper, served during the American Revolution as lieutenant of the 74th regiment. Manuscript note on grey mount confounds Belcher with his father, also Jonathan Belcher and 'first mason in America - Born in Cambridge'. But the hand is that of a young man and Belcher's father's dates are 1681/2-1757.
