Autograph Letter Signed to his sister, Elizabeth M. Cutter, Dabvers Mass.
3pp 4to, [West Indies – St Thomas (now Virgin Islands)] fine and extensive letter written by Levi Cutter Jnr to his sister Elizabeth, and describing the island in detail, neat hand, with circular ‘ship’ and 12c rate postmarks. After some general worsds about the island he adds a comment that the "charm o f first appearance is in some measure lost when you get on shore by finding that you are in the West Indies and amongst a host of Jews whose civility is measured by the gain your visit may be to them." He describes the island (“St Thomas…is the prettiest place I believe I have ever seen. The town is built upon the sides or tops of three hills and has the most beautiful appearance from the vessels in the harbour…’ and the dress of the inhabitants ("American style"). He asks for a reply from his sister and his cousin, Cornelia, and part of the latter's reply fills the space around the address panel on the fourth page. An interesting word picture of an island which at that time was part of the Danish possessions in the Caribbean.
