12mo, eight pages. Very good, with slight wear to inner margins from removal from stubs (not affecting text). An informative discussion of the commercial prospects in the vilayet of Adana. He has 'been absent a great deal travelling', hence the delay in answering Haynes-Smith's questions. Begins by discussing the 'titles to property &c. here in Cases of improvement schemes &c.' Next comes the 'population of the vilayet' ('about half a million [...] The language generally is Turkish all over'). Moves on to a discussion of the 'total revenue', including taxes, and 'the tithes - which interest us most'. Brief mention of disputes, day labour, house rent, before moving on to more extended discussion of 'the enterprises most immediately of interest' ('the marsh-reclaiming project near Tarsus [...] the ancient marble quarries at Tarsus'. Hopes 'Mr. C. Christian of Cyprus will take these up [...] He was very pleased with what he saw.' 'There is a Concession asked for for some half million cubic metres of timber to be cut just opposite to Cyprus near Selefkich.' Finally mentions 'a very valuable copper mine and timber cutting Concession for which the firman is actually given for which some British subjects are required as Capitalists to work them'. Ends 'In fact, what is there not, if our people would only come forward? | I really believe, as you once said, we could buy the whole vilayet if it were desired!' Sends his regards to Lady Haynes-Smith (Alice Maud Sturgis).
