Ranging in size from a 7 x 11mm yellow hexagon to a 2.5 x 5 cm blue oval. Printed in a range of colours and cut in a variety of shapes. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with 98 of 152 items laid down on a piece of card. The dating in the following description is from the British Book Trade Index (BBTI). An interesting collection of labels, mostly nineteenth-century and mainly relating to the British booktrade, ranging from 'BRO: R. SPENCER, | MASONIC BOOKSELLER' of 314 High Holborn (Robert Spencer, 1831-1846), to 'J. B. BROWN. | Bookbinder to | HIS MAJESTY. | Castle Street Windsor.' (John Burgiss Brown, 1830-1836). Most of the labels date from the nineteenth century, and the vast majority are British, places including Bath, Belfast, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Canterbury, Carlisle, Derby, Doncaster, Dublin, Durham, Glasgow, Greenwich, Guildford, Huddersfield, Kensington, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Louth, Maidenhead, Manchester, Newbury, Newcastle upon Tyne, Oakingham, Oxford, Portsmouth, Reading, Richmond, Ryde, St Austell, Sheffield, Shrewsbury, Southampton, Strabane, Tunbridge Wells, Winchester, Wolverhampton, Worcester. Fewer than a dozen items come from foreign places, including Cairo, Calgary, Leipzig, Middelburg, New Orleans (Thomas O'Donnell, 160 Camp Street), Stuttgart, Sydney. A few handfuls date from the middle of the twentieth century (one Boots and one Foyles label). The only duplicated items are two copies of 'S. CURTIS. | BINDER (Samuel Curtis, London, 1829-1846); and variants, in yellow and red, of the label of Richard Beckley, bookseller of 42 Piccadilly (1833). The oldest example would appear to be the octagonal 1.8 x 2.8 cm label in black relief on green paper of Alexander and James Black and Henry Parry (1800-1804) of '7 Leadonhall [sic] Strt', London. Another nice early example is an engraving on pink paper of an open book, standing on two closed books, for 'HOOPER BINDER | No. 14, | Wapping Wall.' (not in BBTI). Another nice example is the 2.2mm square label of John Cawthorn of London (1805-1817): 'Sold by I. Cawthorn. | Bookseller. Publisher | Binder & Stationer. | 5 Catherine St. Strand | Schools supplied | on the lowest terms | Books bot sold or exchand. | Great allowances to Merchants & Gentlemen | going Abroad.' Also present is the elegant 2.4 x 3.5 cm orange label of George Kay of Weymouth (1830): 'CIRCULATING LIBRARY | KAY, | Printer. | Bookseller | & Stationer. | WEYMOUTH. | Books neatly bound. | AUGUSTA PLACE.' Also the 1.5 cm diameter circular label of Staunton & Son, Strand booksellers and stationers (1817-1830), and the green 1.7 x 3 cm label of Smart & Parke, Wolverhamton printers, booksellers and stationers (1831). Also included, taking the number up to 155, are three non-trade labels: one for the Norfolk & Norwich Library, one the small and elegant bookplate of 'ALBAN HART', and the third a small monogram bookplate.
