Contemporary inscription on p.30: 'Thomas Richard Woollard his Book | Given him by Ann Wright 1840'. The signature of Sarah Wollard is also present. BBTI has Frederick Lankester active in Bury St. Edmunds between 1821 and 1864, but this may reflect a confusion between Frederick and Francis Lankester. COPAC holds items by published by Frederick Lankester between 1824 and 1837. No other copy of this particular edition traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

An interesting collection of labels, mostly nineteenth-century and mainly relating to the British booktrade, ranging from 'BRO: R. Title on front wrap, which is printed on shiny paper. Printed at head of title: 'With the Author's Compliments.' The author is in favour of the employment of women, as this would 'diminish the number of our unemployed poor, instead of supporting institutions for their relief'. His scheme 'divides itself into three divisions': '1. - To provide better education for girls, and improved means for studying when they are grown up. | 2.

In fair condition, aged and a little grubby, in worn and frayed wraps with front cover detached. Uncommon: a total of seven copies on COPAC and OLCL WorldCat. The margins have been slightly trimmed, affecting the author's presentation at the head of the title page, which reads: 'Mr Walker | With J. Holland's Respe | Octr. 26 <...>'. Full page 'Preface' in small print, dated 'Newcastle, September, 1832', on p.3, and full-page 'Note', in even smaller print, on the following page. A nicely printed poem, with numerous elucidatory footnotes in small print.

At foot of page: 'An acrostic Written for Mr Lupton Esqre | Septr 20th 1828 | John Nicholson'. The poem, the first letter of whose lines spell out 'LUPTON' (the engraver Thomas Goff Lupton?), reads: 'Love thy father Love thy God | unto him Give honor who the seas has trod | Pray to him upon thy Knees | To him who form'd the world the seas | Order'd Creation made Eternity | Nature is but a shade compard to Thee'. PORTRAIT: Lithographic engraving.

Both items are laid down on a 12mo leaf extracted from an album. All in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Laid down on the reverse of the leaf is an early eighteenth-century engraving of a man (William Hutton?) holding a book. The explanatory note, on one side of the leaf from the album, reads: 'This Leaf, given to me by Mr. Samuel Hutton, High Street, is taken from a Volume of unpublished poems, composed by, and in the Autograph of, William Hutton. | That below which I received from Mr.

(dated 'Good Friday, 1938'), 'The Third Day | Narrative of Cleopas' (dated 'Easter, 1938'), 'The Victorians', 'Robert Blake', 'Keats', 'John Richard Green' and 'To my Nurse | June, 1938'.

Both items bound together in nineteenth-century worn brown-cloth 8vo binding, with 'THE JUBILEE 1827' in gilt on the spine. Ownership inscription on front pastedown of the actor and theatrical writer Hallam Fordham, dated Oxford 1942. Beales, also a sign painter and picture framer, was a successful and prolific photographer (he boasts on two of the items below of '3,400 Testimonials'), whose Parade Studio was at 5 South Bar, Banbury, from 1888 to 1911, with a secondary business at the County Studio, George Row, Northampton at around the same time. Beales claimed the Royal patronage of both Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, and aimed at the upper end of the market. Seven of the eight items in good condition, lightly-aged, but Item Four with minor damage (see description).

Printed on one side of 9 x 13 cm card, with rounded corners, edged in silver. A tasteful example of Victorian printing, by a printer whose calling card boasted of his 'Specialities in the best class of work.' Very good, lightly-aged. The word 'Sonnet.' is printed at the head in gothic type, the rest being in roman. The poem begins: 'O GREATEST Poet of the living age! | For many a year to come thy fame will ring | Throughout the land. Grateful to thee, I bring | A simple tribute, writ on simpler page.' Beneath the sonnet, to the left, is the date 'June, 1892.', with 'E.

An attractive and varied collection of twenty-four items from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury', and produced by the firm for a number of clients in the wine and spirit trade. (The calling card of partner John Cheney describes him as a 'Printer in Gold, Silver, and Colours', with 'Specialities in the best class of work', and the company's high standards attracted clients from London's West End.

An attractive production, wtih the light-blue card covers printed in dark blue ink, with the club's device, featuring a lion on top of a wheel, embossed and printed in red. A list of names of the 'Executive' is inside the front cover. With the sixteen 'Rules' on the first two pages, and the other headings: 'Racing Fixtures', 'Executive Meetings', 'General Meetings'; the fourth page carries general notes.

Printed in brown within a decorative gold border, on one side of a piece of 25.5 x 20.5 cm light-blue paper. Nearly fine. Heading in fancy type reading 'W. JAMES RAE & CO., | Coach Builders.', with 5.5 x 11 cm engraving of the Midland Works beneath it.

Printed in purple ink on both sides of a 9 x 11.5 cm grey card with rounded edges. In very good condition. One side attractively printed, with fancy type, decorative border and floral vignette. The other more businesslike, headed 'W. J. Little, Stationery, Library, and Useful Present Depot, Next London and South Western Bank, High Street, Harlesden, N.W.' and carrying a list of prices for 'Special Value Writing Papers'. The printers' details are not given, but the item comes from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

Printed in letterpress on one side of a 28 x 22 cm piece of laid paper. In good condition, lightly aged. Tastefully printed in the customary mixture of fonts and point sizes. Printed in brown on one side of a 25 x 18.5 cm piece of cream paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. Beneath the heading is a 6 x 9 cm engraving of the machine, followed by twelve lines of description, and the prices for eleven different versions of the machine. The firms address is at the foot, with the printers' slug outside the border in the bottom right-hand corner. From the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

An attractive piece of Victorian commercial printing. Printed in black on a 31.5 x 21 cm sheet of grey paper. In very good condition, lightly-aged. Beneath the words 'John Blanch & Sons' | Hammerless Ejector Gun | (PATENT)' is the engraving (roughly 8.5 x 15 cm), showing the area around the hinge-pin and trigger of the gun, with a cartridge.

Printed in brown on one side of a 20.5 x 25.5 cm piece of grey paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. An attractive production, with the text in a variety of fonts and point sizes. Beneath the heading 'Christmas Season, 1890.', the left-hand side of the page carries an engraving of eighteenth-century party-goers descending a staircase into a room in which is the sign 'Ludwig's Showroom for Xmas & New Year Presents.' On the right of the page the text reads: '84, High Street, Banbury. | J. H. Ludwig | Calls attention to his Season's Novelties in every Department | Showroom is now ready.

All four items tastefully printed by Cheney & Sons, and all in very good condition. The first two items with 'CHENEY & SONS. TYP., BANBURY' at the foot of the first page; the third and fourth items without printers' details. ONE: For 'J. Harlock & Son, Linen & Woollen Drapers'. 4pp., 16mo (14 x 11 cm). Bifolium. On paper which is light-blue on one side and pink on the other. The design of the item features the cutting away for the top corner of the first leaf to reveal the words 'Sole Agents in Banbury for Dr. Jaeger's sanitary clothing' on the second.

The six items in very good condition, lightly aged. ONE: 'Trade List' by 'Henry Stone & Son, Wholesale Stationers and Box Manufacturers, Banbury', for 'Wedding Cake Boxes'. Printed in green on one side of a piece of 25 x 18.5 cm cream paper. At head are engravings for 'No. 21, with Tabs' and 'Nos. 27 and 28, Orange Blossom Design'. Numbers, names, dimensions and prices are given for six 'White Satin Watered Paper, with Lace Flies', and two 'Special New Design | Orange Blossoms on a Silver Ground'.

ONE: Letterhead (1p., 12mo). On the verso of the second leaf of a bifolium. Tasteful and restrained design, with the following in larger print on the left-hand side of the letterhead: '187 Piccadilly | London ........ 189 ....', and the following in smaller print on the right-hand side of the letterhead: 'HATCHARDS | BOOKSELLERS TO THE | QUEEN'. Very good, on lightly aged paper. TWO: Compliments slip, printed in brown on one side of a 6 x 9.5 cm piece of shiny cream paper. In small type within a ruled border is the following: 'WITH MESSRS.

The Victoria County History volume for the County of Oxford, Banbury Hundred, describes the firm of Stone & Son as an 'important firm [...] founded by Henry Stone, a Banbury bookseller, who in 1871 started to manufacture a patent letter-filing box invented by his brother-in-law, John Cash of Coventry; first the business developed into general cabinet-making and cardboard-box manufacture, then into high-grade colour printing, and finally into fine-art reproduction.
