The 'Abstract' and 'Bye-Laws' total 45pp., 12mo, attached in one unbound pamphlet. Complete, but aged and dusty: an item that certainly saw duty in its colliery. The 'Abstract' is 41pp., 12mo, paginated 1-40; with a single page headed 'Timbering in Mines. | Special Rules' on a leaf tipped in after p.38. The title-page is headed 'Published under the direction of the Committee for Yorkshire.', and the full title includes: '[...] General Rules and Special Rules to be observed by the Owners, Agents, Managers, Under-Managers, Under-Viewers, Enginewrights, Deputies, and Work-people of Messrs. John Brown & Co.'s (Limited) [...]'. On the title-page and on p.40 the words 'ALDWARKE MAIN' and 'SWALLOWWOOD' are stamped additions in purple, with 'SWALLOWWOOD' and 'ALDWARKE, NR. ROTHERHAM' similarly added on p.39. P.40 consists of a 'Certificate of Special Rules' by W. H. Pickering, H.M. Inspector of Mines, and it has the printed date 9 August 1888 altered in manuscript to 7 February 1902. The 'Bye-Laws' are on a bifolium paginated 1-4, tipped in at the end of the 'Abstracts'. P. 4 carries the slug 'Jenkinson, Marshall & Co., Surrey Street and Tudor Street, Sheffield.' It has the words 'ALDWARKE MAIN' and 'SWALLOWWOOD' stamped in purple on p.2. A valuable couple of documents, giving an insight into every aspect of Victorian coal mining, from the 'Employment of Boys, Girls, and Women' to the 'Explosives Order'. Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library, or on COPAC (which does list a similarly-titled item of 19pp. in the National Library of Scotland).
