The first five items are scarce: the only copies of One on COPAC at Oxford and the British Library; no copy on COPAC of Two; the only copies of Three and Four at Oxford; Five is a galley proof; and Six only to be found at Oxford, the British Library, the LSE and University College, London. Twenty-one of the twenty-two maps are stapled into a buff card folder, bearing on the cover, in manuscript: Maj. V. S. Duncan-Jones. | Tunisia | 1/200,000'. The twenty-second map loosely inserted, as is Jones's autograph letter to Pitt. In fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. The bound maps, all of which are in colour and all around 50 x 33 cm., are numbered in pencil 1 to 23, with 16 and 20 lacking.

Both the folder and title-page number the copy '8' in blue pencil. With five fold-out maps, the first three picked out in colours, titled: 'Battle of Fondouk', 'Battles of Goubellat Plain & Tunis', 'Later Phase of Battle of Tunis', 'Trace showing principal German Minefields Bou Arada - Medjez el Bab - Tunis' and 'Trace showing typical German Minefield encountered'.

The present diary is of some significance, presenting a first-hand account by a British officer of the Anglo-American 'Run for Tunis' that followed Operation Torch - the invasion of French North Africa in November 1942. It marks Eisenhower's first campaign following his appointment as Commanding General, European Theater of Operations. Four years before the writing of the two letters present here Jones and Pitt had collaborated in the publication of Jones's book 'Operation Torch' (1972), which Pitt (1918-2006) edited for a series first published by the American firm Bannatine.

In his 'Foreword' Keightley urges the reader, somewhat confusingly, to 'make absolutely certain that there is nothing left to help him ['your men'] fight efficiently and gallantly which it is in your power to do'. On 4 x 9.5cm piece of paper. In fair condition, aged, and with rust staining from staple to left of signature.

The tale told anonymously by Charlotte Anne Moberly (1846-1937) and Eleanor Jourdain (1863-1924) in their 'An Adventure' (1911) is probably the most famous true-life ghost story of the twentieth century, and has been the subject of an enormous amount of analysis. For more information see the couple's entries in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The present material is in good condition, with light signs of age and wear. It was assembled by Holroyd - a Sherlock Holmes expert - with the intention of writing a book on the subject. ONE.

He begins by explaining that a delay to his departure for Scotland is the reason for the late reply. 'To morrow or next day we shall set out. The moment I reach Edinburgh I shall see Cathcart & immediately write you most minutely every thing regarding the Richmond Scenery | All this Party send you their best Compts.

Printed on both sides of an 11 x 23 cm piece of grey paper. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. A nice piece of ephemera. The front is tastefully laid out, with fancy lettering and the royal crest. Numbered in red ink 1379. Recording Miss Fordyce's guinea subscription to the association. The reverse has the terms of the Association engraved in copperplate over ten lines. It is docketed '£1 . 1 | Fine Art Association | 25 March 1857'.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with slight damage to corners caused by removal from an album. 'The successful subject referred to in the talk was Mr. Basil Shackleton, a London photographer. On an average he would get about eight cards correct out of every twenty five, compared with a chance expectation of only five. When this occurs consistently over a very large number of trials, the odds soon pile up.' Gillman's summary is 'correct as far as it goes'.

She is especially pleased that he has agreed to speak at 'our meeting', as the League is 'always so anxious to have our meetings all-party ones - this one more especially so'. The theme of the meeting is the role of the Poles in the Second World War, and she describes the plan of the meeting, which is to include a speech by 'Major Beamish' on 'conditions in Poland'; and a resolution by the Dean of Chichester ('our Vice-Chairman'), seconded by 'Mr. O'Brien M.P. (Labour)'.

The twenty items in this collection are in fair condition, aged and worn, and present an interesting capsule of political activism in late-Victorian Britain. The printed circular (1p., 8vo) is headed 'THE OPIUM TRADE. | London, March 17th, 1886.' It is signed at the foot by Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), and requests support from Members of the House of Commons for Sir Joseph W. Pease's resolution, during a vote on 23 March.
