[Autobiography, inscribed by Jarvis, with letters] Half a Life
Soldier, administrator, orientalist (1879-1953). INSCRIBED by Jarvis on the titlepage "C.S. Jarvis/ For:- June & Eric/from Claude/29:4:43". WITH: 2 substantial Typed Letters Signed, 2pp each, 4to 1943 and 1952, sl crumpled, in the discussing his books (incl. "Arab Command", fishing, "Homeguarding ("and sick of it"), quoting his reply to someone asking about the shooting abilities of people on his musketry course that "that man fired for the King's Cup five years running, that man was best shot in India for three years, I was best shot in the Southern Command, and that man was in the 60th Rifles team. After this they suffered from despondency and despair". He responds to news on the Fronts (Libya, Corsica, "Bon peninsula), refelcting on the poor performance of the Italian Army. His letter of 1952 is mainly devoted to a fishing adventure with a trout, recalling his contributions to "Country Life". 3 items inc. book,
