[ Charles Rowland Johns, Welsh author. ] Autograph Letter Signed ('C. R. Johns') to John Cuming Walters, editor of the Manchester City News, regarding his review of his novel 'Mind You', and those of other newspapers.
2pp., 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Johns's book 'Mind You, or, Lewys Lad and his Friend Shadrach' was published in 1922, and he writes to thank Cuming Walters for his 'appreciative review of "Mind-You" - of which you so kindly send me an advance proof'. Walters' praise has given him 'wonderful encouragement', and he hopes it is 'thoroughly deserved'. 'Robert Lynd was most kind in the "Daily News", giving me a full column - mostly praise. The "Nation" & "Truth" were kind; so was the "Yorkshire Post" but the "Liverpool Daily Post" said I "toiled for 200 pages & caught nothing." Most of the papers have ignored the book, which he accepts is 'the usual run of things'. 'But when you speak of it as you do, both in the notice & in your kind personal letter, I feel that the book was not written in vain. I hear of chuckles & smiles in sick-rooms & of the victims of "outrageous fortune" forgetting their worries in reading "Mind You" & it makes me glad I wrote it. | I don't know if The Welsh like it; I wonder! The exiled Welshmen do, so far as I know their opinion & the Scotch are most appreciative (readers, not reviewers.)' He concludes by thanking Walters for his appreciation of the books 'side-lights', and for a 'most kind notice of the League's Report'.
