2pp., 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Johns's book 'Mind You, or, Lewys Lad and his Friend Shadrach' was published in 1922, and he writes to thank Cuming Walters for his 'appreciative review of "Mind-You" - of which you so kindly send me an advance proof'. Walters' praise has given him 'wonderful encouragement', and he hopes it is 'thoroughly deserved'. 'Robert Lynd was most kind in the "Daily News", giving me a full column - mostly praise.

On 3.5 x 11 cm slip of light-grey paper, cut from the end of a letter. In good condition, laid down on backing slip, which carries the manuscript caption: 'Samuel Smiles. Author of "Self Help" and many other Works.' Good firm signature, beneath the printed valediction 'Yours truly'.

One: Holograph poem by Gere in red ink on slip of paper. Apparently unpublished, it reads: 'I.M. E.HWM | buried Hampstead 18. 9. '52 | Grave scholar of a Grays Inn cell, | Gay naturalist of Norfolk fen, | Divion [sic, corrected in pencil to 'Division'] now ordains farewell. | I shall not see your like again. | JG'. Items Two to Seventeen: Sixteen transcriptions of letters and notes from Meyerstein to John Gere (as 'J G'). Each on a separate piece or slip of paper, and all written out in red ink.

2pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He will have to forgo meeting Britton, as he the previous evening he received 'a Message from the Horse Guards to attend there on Saturday at 3 O Cl'. He has 'just finished a Whole Length of Ld Hill, & its on that acct. I am summoned, I was yesterday Introduced with it To His Majesty so you see my present situation'. He will send the prints the following Tuesday, 'as they are in my press'. Turner's engraving of Hill is captioned: 'Painted by Henry W. Pickersgill Esq. R.A. Engraved by C. Turner, A.R.A.

Letter: 1p., 12mo. Fair, on lighty-aged paper. Hazard does not 'hold the bonds you allude to', but still has some other interests in relation to a named party. He will be in New York 'ere long'. Docketed on the reverse: 'Does not hold La C Bond | Wil be in N Y before long'. The receipt is attractively printed on one side of a piece of 16 x 6.5 cm paper. In good condition. Hazard acknowledges receipt from the company of $56.87, the dividend on inusrance policy 1931. Signed by him 'Peace Dale Mg Co | [signed] R G Hazard Jnor'. The two items appear unconnected.

12mo, 1 p. Fair, on aged paper, with brown paper mount along one margin. The letterhead, with design of three swans, is printed in purple. Having seen a notice by Freeman in the Sunday Times, he has 'jotted down (at high speed) the enclosed notes' (not present). Typed at foot of page: 'Presented to my collection by William Freeman Esq.' Laid down on the reverse is the caricature of Fothergill by Bert Thomas, printed in colour, from the dust-jacket of 'John Fothergill's Cookery Book' (1943), with attractive manuscript caption in blue and red ink.

Folio, 1 p. On bifolium. Docketed on reverse of second leaf. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Martin having written to him on 16 September, 'renewing [his] application to be permitted to retire with the Rank and Half pay of Captain', Somerset is 'directed by the General Commanding in Chief [Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill]' to acquaint Martin 'that His Lordship can only repeat the Substance of the communication which I was desired to address to Mr. Daly on the 4th. Instant on the same subject, viz - that it is wholly out of Lord Hill's power to comply with your request'.

Laid down on 114 quarto pages; the leaves disbound and loose. The items themselves in good condition, on aged paper. Also included is a mass of loose material (having become detached from the album's pages), including 21 colour drawings (many marked as having been drawn by Wingfield between the ages of 8 and 12), 10 black and white drawings, 10 cut-out grotesque figures (three in colour), three loose quarto Colnaghi engravings ('Wm. Fredk. King of Prussia', 1814; 'Field Marshal G. L.

12mo, 1 p. Eight lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. Begins 'The Queen has signed the Warrants, but things [sic] there is a mistake, as Duncan's Salary is but 80 L.' If her page's salary is £200, 'another Warrant must be made out [...] Mr. Rowland will do well to inquire about it.' The Queen's entry in the Oxford DNB stresses that she was never 'able to manage her money'.

12mo: 1 p. Good, though lightly creased and discoloured, and with the blank reverse tipped in on a strip of paper removed from an autograph album. He thanks her for her kindness, and has 'duly received the £3' for two books: a work by 'Mrs. Evans' and a copy of 'Two Sisters' (by Elizabeth Thomasina Meade).

Belgian writer (1878-1953), author of the fairy-tale 'The two hunchbacks', set to music by Frank Bridge. One page, quarto. Poor, on discoloured, creased paper with several closed tears. He thanks her for her letter and has 'written to Miss Sands to ask her if she could not possibly alter the date as I have another lecture on the same day, at night. But if impossible, I will come all the same.' Signed 'Em Cammaerts'. Docked in pencil, by 'HSJ', 'Dec: 4. 1915. I heard M.

Thirty-two pages. Octavo. In original light-blue illustrated printed wraps. A scarce item, in frail condition, with the wraps worn, spotted and frayed, particularly at the spine. Closed tears to reverse of wraps, which is stamped 'MAY BE HAD OF J.S. CROPLEY, WINDSOR'. Rust staining from staples. Internally sound, tight and generally clean, with bottom outside corner dogeared.
