The Hogarth Press novel 'The Three Rings' by Barbara Baker, inscribed by the author with Autograph Letter Signed by her to Lady Kinnoull.
Letter: 4pp., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Loosely inserted in the book. Addressed to 'Dear Lady Kinnoull', which to Baker 'sounds so formal but when I was with you I got to feel as if we had known each other a long time'. Fearing that the Countess may consider her 'one of those people who take books', she explains about the difficulties of returning one: 'Our intention was to bring it back when we called for my picture but, as you know, we came to you from Big Sur & left Carmel early next morning. So it had to be posted & I cogitate simply ages before doing up a parcel.' She hopes the Countess is 'still painting & writing', and that 'publishers will realise how beautifully you write'. Her own 'weakness of character' prevents her from writing anything but letters. She invites her to San Francisco, and the letter concludes with references to 'Harriet' and 'Alan'. The book is in good condition, on aged paper, in blue cloth, with drawings by Trekkie Parsons, whose dustwrapper is also present, in good condition on aged paper stock. Inscription on the front free endpaper reads: 'For Claude Kinnoull. | In remembrance of happy hours with you at Carmel. | Barbara Baker. | San Francisco. | July 24th. 1945.'
