Macqueen-Pope, 'who has been a close friend of mine in the worlds of journalism and the theatre for more years than either of us may wish to remember - at least forty'. Having applied unsuccessfully for seats at the premiere of 'My Fair Lady' he suggests a 'special performance' for 'those members of the journalistic profession who fall by the wayside'.

A friend of Dylan Thomas and a leading poet of the 1930s London literary scene, Dyment is the subject of a warm appreciation by Robert Graecen in The Times, 8 June 1971. The present collection consists of a series of amusing poems regarding various members of the animal kingdom. ONE: Typescript of 'Fur, Feather, and Fin | by | Clifford and Marcella Dyment'. Address at foot of title-page: 'Flat 5, 53, Harrington Gardens, London, S.W.7.' 46pp., 8vo. Internally in good condition, on lightly-aged paper.

The circular is in the form of a facsimile of Faithfull's handwriting, with the words 'Mr O'Beirne' added in her genuine hand. Reads: 'Miss Faithfull presents her Compliments to [ Mr O'Beirne. ] | She is asking all who are interested in her work to order "the Victoria" for one year, during which it is expected to establish itself by its literary merits.' Faithfull had opened the Victoria Press at Great Coram Street in 1860. In 1863 she founded the Victoria Magazine. It ceased publication in 1880.

Oval window in cover revealing a profile portrait of Phillipps, which is printed in colour and tipped-in onto the first recto, which is bordered in brown. Text in brown, with title-page reading: 'Stationers' Hall | Phillipps Centenary Dinner | 4th July 1972 | Chairman | The Rt. Hon. Viscount Eccles | P.C.

In black and white on 34 x 23 cm shiny art paper. Possibly extracted from an unnamed periodical. Lightly aged and worn, and ruckled from being laid down on paper backing. Tiny chip lost at foot. Sixteen female figures are shown, in costumes representing newspapers from the 'Daily Mail' to 'The Sketch', and including 'Mdlle. Zangfretta as Fashion', around a central representation of a scene from the ballet, featuring Adeline Genée as the Liberty of the Press.

Heavily influenced by its author's own journalistic career, 'The Pen and the Sword' is not only of great significance in the development of Michael Foot's thinking, but is also an important work in the study of Jonathan Swift. The book was a firm success, going through four printings between 1957 and 2008. It was first published in London by Macgibbon and Kee, with the subtitle 'A Year in the Life of Jonathan Swift' (the year in question being 1710).

Evans's book on 'The Shaft Graves and Bee-hive Tombs of Mycenae' had been published by Macmillans in 1929, and Evans writes that the present item 'has been prepared in view of the considered opinion concerning the author's important discovery expressed by Professor Friedrich von Duhn, the distinguished German archaeologist, a little before his death'. This opinion of Duhn ('the "Grand Old Man" of German Archaeology') was 'addressed to the Author a little before his death'.

A collection of poems by various authors, arranged by J.R. Tutin. [84]pp., 8vo, 8 illustrations inc. frontispiece, buckram quarter binding, design embossed in gilt of wax cream paper covers. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper (recto)("Wm Lampton Doughty [...] 15.viii.19". INSCRIBED BY compiler on second free endpaper (recto) "Edward Lamplough from his old riend the Editor | J.R.T. | Xmas 1911". On verso, Sappho in Greek letters with short quote from Swinburne in Tutin's hand. Tutin's initials also on half-title.

21pp., fourteen of them in 4to, and the other seven pages cut down. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Stapled together, with the first leaf detached. The article is complete but untitled. It is unattributed, but comes from the J. R. Gordon papers. A well-written and incisive piece, written from an insider's point of view. Gordon lays out his stall at the very start: 'Few people of our generation have influenced the life of it so profoundly as Lord Northcliffe. He was the incomparable journalist of our age.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition, lightly aged. Had he known that Hughes's wedding was 'coming off so soon' he would have been 'in time with a little gift'. As it is, he asks him to choose for himself, 'with the aid of your wife': 'Are you and she sick of the Oxford Books of Verse? Is Shakspeare's England too weighty (avoirdupois) for war-time establishments?

16 x 20 cm booklet, consisting of a bifolium stitched with black green thread into covers of thicker paper. In fair condition, aged and worn, with remains of clear plastic front covering. On the front cover is a heavily-inked art photograph superimposing an image of a musical score over the edges of an fanned-out signature. On the inside of the back cover is a facsimile of a calligraphic inscription in Latin, in Renaissance style. The inner contents consists of two facsimiles.

A brief description of the more than 800 items in the collection, which was arranged in ten volumes. Occasional entries feature quotations. Of interest is Vol. I, item 58: 'Winston Churchill, M.P., from Government House, Natal, in which he says: - | [five line quotation from the letter follows]'. See also vol.4, item 11: 'Napoleon I.

Hargreaves begins the pamphlet by stating his case: 'The real issue involved is, not whether the "impersonality" of the Press, as illustrated by the management of the Times, is fair and acceptable to a few prominent politicians, but whether it is useful and beneficial to the community at large.

Full title: 'Report of the Committee of the Society of Dilettanti, appointed by the Society to superintend the expedition lately sent by them to Greece and Ionia; containing an Abstract of the Voyage of the Mission, a List of the Materials collected by them, and a Plan to facilitate the Publication of those Materials.' A convincing copy of a genuine typed letter, with Milford's signature and the letterhead in black ink, and the typewritten text in purple. 25 lines of text in three paragraphs. An interesting glimpse into the state of the British publishing industry in the period immediately following the First World War.

Letter: 4pp., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Loosely inserted in the book. Addressed to 'Dear Lady Kinnoull', which to Baker 'sounds so formal but when I was with you I got to feel as if we had known each other a long time'. Fearing that the Countess may consider her 'one of those people who take books', she explains about the difficulties of returning one: 'Our intention was to bring it back when we called for my picture but, as you know, we came to you from Big Sur & left Carmel early next morning.

The scandal resulted in the dissolution of the company in 1932, and its merging with others to form Air France. In their 'France and Fascism: February 1934 and the Dynamics of Political Crisis' (Routledge, 2015), Jenkins and Millington explain the background as follows: 'In 1931, it was revealed that the owners of the prestigious airline Aéropostale, the Bouilloux-Lafont family, had diverted Aéropostale's government subsidies into other struggling companies they controlled. When these collapsed, Aéropostale fell with them.

Large (35 x 25 cm.) sumptuously-printed stitched pamphlet, in printed wraps. 16pp., with one additional collotype plate (stamped 'Specimen Colour Plate') and one tipped-in plate (of the binding), both coloured, and three full-page half-tone plates. Subscription form (The British Book Centre, Inc., New York), in red and black at rear. Aged and worn, with creasing to front cover. Includes three-page 'Commentary on a Unique Volume' by Winchester, and the first three pages of Wilson's text, two pages listing the contents, and specimen pages.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In very good condition. Covering the whole of the front page is a beautiful coloured illustration of the Imperial State Crown, with no text. The following three pages are printed in black and purple, with the second page carrying the publication details; the third page a full-page note from the editor; and the last page an advertisement for Sir John Wilson's 'Royal Philatelic Collection'. No copies of this item traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.
