The correspondence indicates the closeness between Scharf and the family of the man responsible for his appointment as Secretary to the National Portrait Gallery. Topics include: the obtaining by her son [Edward Stanhope (1840-1893)] of 'a first Class in Mathematics the first in that branch at Ch[rist]. Ch[urch, Oxford]. since 1847'; the family's desire for 'lectures on Drawing', particularly the daughter, who is 'really progressing very much [...] & is quite devoted to it'; the 'new Song of Benedicts'; his father's health (); the ill health of a neighbour; the daughter's copying of 'the Heads you were so good as to bring her'; his visit to Sevenoaks; invitations to visit. In an undated letter, referring to a autograph album, she writes that she is 'collecting Stories with great Energy for my Vol. 2 - so splendidly commenced by you | I didn't tell you that Mr Waul made me a spirited sketch of his forthcoming picture, but the execution looks very Coarse after your frontispiece'.
