Parts 19, 21, 24-31, 35, 37-39, 42-47, 49-55, 57, 60-65, 67-72. Internally in good condition, on aged paper with occasional creasing. In brown printed wraps generally in good condition (worsening as the run proceeds), but with particular damage to three parts: Part 64 has stained wraps, with half of the back cover lacking; Parts 68 and 72 have stained and damaged wraps. The periodical, which ran from 1872 to 1884, was an extraordinary achievement on Burgess's part, and not cheap to produce: a year's subscription for twelve issues cost the not-inconsiderable sum of £2. Burgess's obituary in The Times (7 October 1916) points out that he 'did much to pave the way for the systematic researches of the present day'. Each part contained around half a dozen papers by different contributors, as well as reviews and correspondence, often with lithographic plates (including one map and two fold-outs). Contributors were usually of European extraction, but not exclusively: Prof. Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandakar, V. N. Tirumalacharyar, Ramchandra G. Angal, L. Y. Askhedkar, V. N. Narasimmiyengar and Dinshah Ardeshir Taleyarkhan all made contributions, as did 'His Highness Rama Varma, First Prince of Travancore', 'Kasinath Trimbak Telang, Esq., M.A., LL.B., Advocate, High Court, Bombay' and 'Sri Krishna Sastri Talekar, Deputy Educational Inspector, Ahmadnagar'. Other contributors include: V. Ball; John Beames; Prof. H. Blochmann; J. A. Boyle; G. Bühler; A. C. Burnell; John Cain; Rev. Dr R. Caldwell; Rev. F. T. Cole; Rev. Richard Collins; C. E. G. Crawford; R. N. Cust; G. H. Damant; T. W. Davids; Col. R. R. W. Ellis; J. F. Fleet; John Garrett; Dr J. Gerson da Cunha; F. S. Growse; Rev. A. F. Rudolf Hoernle; Rev. Th. Jellinghaus; Rev. Charles Egbert Kennett; Dr F. Kielhorn; Rev. F. Kittel; Rev. F. J. Leeper; Gilmour M'Corkell; J. S. F. Mackenzie; Major S. B. Miles; J. Muir; A. K. Nairne; 'the Hon'ble Justice J. B. Phear, Calcutta'; W. Ramsay; E. Rehatsek; Lewis Rice; John Rowland; Prof. Schiern; W. F. Sinclair; H. J. Stokes; A. B. Cohen Stuart; Prof. C. H. Tawney; Lieut.-Col. James Tod; M. J. Walhouse; Major J. W. Watson; Capt. E. W. West; Col. H. Yule. The only female contributor to the collection is 'Miss E. Lyall', who published two papers. The papers contributed to the first part give an indication of the general tone: '1. ON COPYING INSCRIPTIONS | 2. THE EARLY VAISHNAVA POETS OF BENGAL, No. 2, CHANDI DAS; by J. BEAMES, Esq., B.C.S. | 3. WALKING THROUGH FIRE, by H. J. STOKES, Esq., M.C.S. | 4. ON SOME BENGALI MANTRAS, by G. H. DAMANT, Bo.C.S., Rangpur | 5. ON SATRUNJAYA AND THE JAINS: III. LASSEN'S ACCOUNT, translated by E. REHATSEK, Esq., M.C.E. | 6. STONE AND WOODEN MONUMENTS IN WESTERN KHANDESH, by W. F. SINCLAIR, B.C.S. | 7. ARCHAEOLOGY IN NORTH TINNEVELLI'. A further two copies, both damaged, are included: Part 41 (April 1875) and Part 59 (October 1876).
