The four items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The first two items originally pinned together. The signature on the first letter clearly written out, the other three signatures more hurried. ONE: 8 February [1880]. 1p., 12mo. 'I am going to take a rest. Supposing I can give you a week (two sketches an evening) between Feb 21 & March 13th. What will you stand?' TWO: Signed undertaking. 1p., 12mo. Not addressed. Begins with quotation: 'Right you are says Moses'. States: 'This is an equivalent for booking you for 23rd. 7 performances'. THREE: 17 February [1880]. Explaining a confusion over the booking. 'When you engaged me for week commencing the 23rd. on condition that I threw in the Sat, of course I thought you meant the Sat in that week (28th.) for which occasion I thought when I got down that I would persuade Harriet Young to play Cups & Saucers with me. I have to give my "Juvenile Party" entertainment on Sat. 21st, for last time at the Comique. What can be done?' He signs 'Your's distractedly'. FOUR: Also 17 February [1880]. 3pp., 12mo. Begins: 'A devil of a bother but I have managed it all right.' He explains the reason for the mistake and then continues: 'Respecting first lord's song - unless you can get it scored & played on hand and get me a chorus (from the band if you will) it goes for nothing.' Concludes: 'The Humorous Musical Sketches had better be my last new one "A Juvenile Party" and "Five Hamlets" which I have never done at Brighton'.
