Russian linguist (died 1948), successively Assistant Lecturer in Russian, Liverpool University; University Reader in Russian, King's College, London; and Sir William Mather Professor of Russian, Manchester University. Both items two pages, 12mo. Both good, on discoloured paper and both docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. Item two carries two small pin holes. ITEM ONE begins 'I am sending you the last seven papers and the Returns.' He recommends in the strongest terms Candidate G116 (Stage III) 'for a Society's Silver Medal' ('The Candidate's essay on Turgenev is good enough to be published in a Russian Journal'.) A note in pencil identifies the student as 'Lt. A. E. S. Miller Stirling | aged 22 | 90 marks'. ITEM TWO concerns changes to the advance paper in Russian. His request for an interview was ignored, but he is pleased to see his views echoed by those of a 'Belfast correspondent'. 'But can it be done without a previous change in the Syllabus?' Both items signed 'M. V. Trofimov'.
