12mo: 3 pp. A bifolium, the first leaf of which is good with light spottinng, but the second of which has the lower half cut away, and traces of glue from previous mounting on its reverse. Hinge strengthened with archival tape. Concerns an essay on 'Petrarch and his times' (unattributed as 4122 in the Wellesley Index). Her note to 'Mr. Froude' [James Anthony Froude (1818-1894)] has been 'handed to' Martin, 'as representing him during his temporary absence in Spain, in the arrangement of Fraser's Magazine'. Froude 'returns early next month - and will no doubt give your proposal immediate attention. From what I know of his views, however, I should think, that a paper from you on Petrarch & his Times would be acceptable.' Martin does not think any 'inconvenience will be caused by delaying [the paper of which you have revised the proof] a month or two longer, so as to give precedence to the paper on Petrarch.' He asks her to 'forward the M.S.', assuring her that it will receive 'due attention'. The other contribution is presumably item 4127 in the Wellesley Index, the unattributed 'Italian states and rulers in the last half of the fifteenth century', which appeared in Fraser's in August 1861.
