12mo, 2 pp. Twenty lines. Text clear and complete. On lightly aged paper with a 2 cm across both leaves of the bifolium (not affecting text). He did not 'draw Domini and Hermione from special people', but believes that 'there are women quite as sincere as they are'. On the subject of 'Hermione's renunciation': 'I think one of that Character, with so strong a belief in her religion, & such evidence of the unhappiness of the man she loved in the life outside his monastery, even with her, would do what she did.' The book was made into a film starring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer (1936).
