4to, 1 p. Fair, on aged paper, with a couple of closed tears neatly repaired on reverse with archival tape. Letterhead ('Importers of Violin, Violoncello and Harp Strings'), with decorative device of two violins, gives the 'Proprietors' as 'S. Bernard Withers, Douglas S. Withers', but with the first name crossed out. Withers writes that 'In this sad time of the loss of my Brother Bernard' Miss Gunn's 'condolences are sincerely appreciated'. 'You, one of our many friends have known my Brother so well & you can imagine how deeply I feel about the sad loss.' Her 'thoughts, at this time' give him 'warmth of spirit, which will to no small amount, help me ini the time of trouble'. Founded in 1765, Withers' is the oldest existing violin shop in the United Kingdom. It is the subject of the book by Adam Whone, '230 years of Violin Craft in Soho'.
