Three leaflets in English, examples of Nazi black propaganda: '"You Americans are sooo different!"'; 'The Girl You Left Behind' and 'While you are away'. Each with a cartoon featuring a semi-naked errant sweetheart.
Each of the three printed on both sides of a piece of paper, 21.5 x 14.5 cm, the last two printed in black and red. The condition of these scarce, ephemeral items, is poor. They are damp-stained, with the first two complete, but with numerous closed tears, and the third with fraying and loss to the margins, resulting in a little loss to the illustration, but with the whole text still legible. ITEM ONE (coded AI-049-3-44) [March 1944?]: Text on one side, headed 'The Way Of All Flesh', begins 'When pretty Joan Hopkins was still standing behind the ribbon counter of a 5 & 10 cts. store on 3rd Avenue in New York City, she never dreamed of ever seeing the interior of a duplex Park Avenue apartment.' Joan gets a job, through 'Lazare's Employment Agency', with 'wily Sam Levy', who 'often invited her up to his place. He had always wanted to show her his "etchings".' (Is this the beginning of the long-running British joke?) The reverse has a full-page picture of a semi-naked Joan in bed with Levy (smoking a cigar and reading the 'Stock Exchange'), headed 'The Girl You Left Behind' and captioned 'Poor little Joan! She is still thinking of Bob . . . . . . .' ITEM TWO (AI-037-2-44) [February 1944?]: One side, carrying illustration of a soldier's grave, with text 'British Soliders! You are fighting and dying far away from your country while the Yanks are putting up their tents in Merry Old England. They've got lots of money and loads of time to chase after your women.' Beside the illustration are the words, in red, 'And what about you?' On the reverse an illustration of a semi-naked woman being embraced in bed by an American soldier, with the caption '"You Americans are sooo different!"' ITEM THREE (AI-046-3-44) [March 1944?]: One side with picture of dead British soldier with caption 'Most of you are convinced that the war will be over in four months. Too bad if it should hit you in the last minute.' Also text beginning 'The Yanks are "lease-lending" your women. Their pockets full of cash and no work to do, the boys from overseas are having the time of their lives in Merry Old England.' On reverse picture of a semi-naked woman putting her stockings on on the side of the bed, while an American soldier dresses, and the caption 'While you are away'.
