"Duplicate" written in top left corner (Sydney's file copy presumably). He acknowledges Patterson's letter of the 5th November 1786 (he officially ceased to be Governor on the 4th) in which Patterson has "stated certain reasons which have induced you to delay the carrying into execution His Majesty's Commands . . . for delivering over the charge of the Island St. John to Colonel Fanning and for your returning to England to answer certain complaints which had been exhibited against you". he declines to go into reasons but says baldly that "His Majesty has no further occasion for your servies as Lieut. Governor of the Island St. John Colonel Fanning . . . will receive from you all the public documents in your custody and such Order and Instructions as have been transmitted to you, which have not been fully executed." See Prince Edward Island: Lieutenant Governors' Gallery (internet) for an account of the quit rent issue, confiscations and subsequent turmoil. Viscount Sydney had places named after him in both Nova Scotia and Australia.
