[ Berlin British Sector, 1956. ] 'Restricted' typescript by the Assistant Provost Marshal: 'Instructions for the Information and Guidance of Travellers using the Berlin-Helmstedt Autobahn'. With typescript 'Tour' of places on the 'East-West-Axis'.

The two items are on the same cheap paper stock, and folded in a way indicating that they were issued together. In fair condition, on browned high-acidity paper, with wear at base of Item One, and one leaf detached from Item Two. The two items are interesting artefacts, and a valuable source of information on Cold War Berlin. ONE: Duplicated typescript. 2pp., folio. Headed: 'Restricted | Overall Speed Limit on Berlin-Helmstedt Autobahn | 50 MPH or 80 KPH | This limit will be strictly observed | All drivers are required to read these instructions | and sign as having done so | Instructions | for the information and guidance of travellers | using the Berlin-Helmstedt Autobahn.' Eightheen points arranged in five sections: 'Before Starting', 'At the check posts', 'On the way', 'Breakdown or accident' and 'Finally'. For example: 'At the BRITISH and RUSSIAN CHECK POSTS you are required to show your CCG FORMS 207 together with valid IDENTITY DOCUMENTS i.e. PASSPORTS for civilians and dependents, or AF B 2603 or RAF FORM 1250 for Service personnel, for ALL persons travelling in your vehicle.' and 'If East German authorities (Field Grey or Green Uniform) request you to stop you will do so and, if asked, display your CCG FORM 207 and IDENTITY CARD or PASSPORT. You will NOT allow these documents to leave your possession, nor will you permit the East German authorities to stamp or otherwise mark them.' TWO: Duplicated typescript. 4pp., folio. On four leaves stapled together. Headed 'EAST-WEST-AXIS' and with 'END OF TOUR' at end. The list of places on the tour begins with Kaiserdamm and Bismarckstrasse and ends with the Olympic Stadium. Most of the places in the list are accompanied by informative notes. One reads: 'ALTONAER STRASSE | English Garden opened by Mr. Eden in May 1952 as a symbol of the good relationship between the British and the Berliners. Plants and shrubs were nearly all presented by horticultural societies in England, and some also came from Windsor Great Park. 3 Camelia trees were presented by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. These together with 3 German trees were planted by Mr. Eden at the opening.' Another begins: 'CHARLOTTENBURGER CHAUSSEE | After the June 1953 riots re-named "Strasse des 17. June". | Tiergarten Station (S-Bahn) | Tiergarten, formerly most famous Berlin Park, destroyed by shelling and bombing, the rest of remaining trees were used for firewood during the cold winter 1945/46; it was freshly laid out in 1950 [...]'.
