She begins by thanking him for his 'very kind letter': 'It is always such an encouragement to me to hear that someone has liked my books, especially someone far away in India. Yet distance makes no difference where two people share the same ideas about life, and like to look about them at the beauty of the world.' She contrasts England ('such a small country, and our population is increasing so fast that new towns are spreading fast over the fields and woods') with India ('a great country with wonderful mountains and forests that will never be destroyed'. While it is 'too late in my life for me to visit India now', but she likes 'to think about it'.
