[Book auction catalogue- annotated] Lowther Castle Near Penrith. The Major part of the Earl of Lonsdale's Collection To be Sold by Public Auction in a Series of Sales at the Castle during April, May and June 1947. [With some prices and names.]
116pp., 4to. Lots 2401 to 4510. In brown printed wraps with design including small illustration of Lowther Castle laid down on front cover. Aged and worn in like wraps. Clearly made out by a substantial bookseller (perhaps Quaritch, since the name does not appear in references). Inside the rear cover the following in pencil: 'Hotel Expenses £18/12/0 | Tips Hotel £2/15/- | Total Spent at Sale £2677/-/-', last figure being an enormous sum for the time. On the front cover a note has been made of three cash sums totalling '582 [pounds]'. A large number of the lots have the totals realised in pencil to the right of the entry, with the owner's highest bid to the left. A few items at the end have the purchaser's name noted: Smith, Thorp, Fishcher, Blackwell, Fletcher and M. Hill feature, as does Maggs, who purchased a presentation copy to Lord Byron of Leigh Hunt's 1815 'Descent of Liberty' for £30, against the owner's highest bid of £9. A few items at the end have a pricing code, featuring the letters 'B G M T X H N S A R' Among the high prices were £58 10s 0d (against the owner's bid of £52) for '3681 Tracts: A collection of Tracts, Sermons, etc., by Jeremy Taylor, Wall, Thomas Browne, Sydenham, including Donnes' [sic] six sermons, Holwell, Castrophe Mundi, 1682, Gunpowder Plot, etc., etc., in 9 volumes, 4to, 1601-1686' and £480 for 'A large Collection of early works on equitation, veterinary medicine, farriery, hunting, etc., in various languages, including Le Nouveay et parfait Mareschal Cavallaria, 1611, De la Nove, La Cavallerie Francoise et Italienne, 1620-, Grisoni, Ordini di Cavalerie, 1553, etc., etc., in all 479 volumes. Some covers broken. Sold as a collection.' Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only two copies on COPAC at Liverpool and Cambridge, presumably not annotated.
