148pp., small 4to. In contemporary red leather half bindings with marbled boards and edges and gilt tooling. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in lightly aged and worn binding. Signed on reverse of front free endpaper: 'J. Borthwick | 1820', and on the page facing this: 'General Account | book. | N.B. The Vouchers are tied up with Labels marked for the respective years. 1p., 12mo. In good condition, on aged paper, in aged franked envelope ('J. Cowell') addressed to 'The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of St. Helena.' Reads: 'My Lord - | I am desired by His Royal Highness, Prince Alfred, to forward you the accompanying portrait of himself. | Believe me | My Lord | Yours faithfully. | J. C. Cowell'.

3pp., folio. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Laid out in the customary fashion, with two tax stamps, one embossed and the other in black ink. Signed 'Cardiff' beside a good impression of his seal in red wax. Witnessed by 'L. Dutens' and 'D G Jacmar'. The indenture is 'Between The Right Honourable John Lord Cardiff of Cardiff Castle in the County of Glamorgan of the first Part John Smith of Wilton Gilbert in the County of Durham Gentleman of the second Part and Thomas Shafto of Dunston in the said County of Durham Esquire off the third Part'.

[2] + 170pp., 8vo. On 172 leaves, held together by a steel stud. In good condition, lightly aged, with discoloring to first leaf and the last seven leaves dogeared. The names of the crew are given on the first covering page, and the cast of characters (but not the names of the actors playing them) on the second. An interesting artefact, indicative of the continuing reassessment and reinterpretation of the works of one of Britain's great writers.

[4] + 74pp., 8vo. In good condition, aged and worn. In worn red cloth binding, with title in gilt on spine and front cover. A brief description of the more than 800 items in the collection, which was arranged in ten volumes. Occasional entries feature quotations. Of interest is Vol. I, item 58: 'Winston Churchill, M.P., from Government House, Natal, in which he says: - | [five line quotation from the letter follows]'. See also vol.4, item 11: 'Napoleon I.

3pp., 8vo. Typescript with a few manuscript emendations, and manuscript note at end attributing the piece to 'C. Campbell' in another hand. On the rectos of three leaves, pinned together. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. The first of the three stories is said to have occurred nearly fifty years before, the narrator stating that he was 'then between thirteen and fourteen years of age', which would put him in his early sixties at the time of writing.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 2pp., 12mo. 3 July 1935. With envelope addressed to Lynd at 5 Keats Grove, Hampstead. 'I had a wonderful description of the Yeats dinner on 27th. Yeats very simple & intimate in his response to the toast, Masefield very fine, a generous recognition of Yeats as his master, called our dear W. B. the greatest living poet. Gogarty horrid making vulgar jokes & laughing with Ld. Semphill during Frances Hacketts speech'. TWO: 1p., 8vo. Undated. Urging the Lynds to 'stay on over […] I have a few funny folks till Monday, otherwise all peaceful'.

On one vellum skin. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Docketed 'No. 1 | Order left 22 May 1872. | Meml. regd. 23d. May 1872. | Order reld. 27th. May 1872' and 'Ashurst Morris & Co | 6 Old Jewry | E.C.' Arranged in the customary fashion, with tax stamps, and the signatures ('G: Ridley' and 'James Caird') on either side of the seal, on folded up strip at foot. The seal, in red wax on a green ribbon is 4.5 cm in diameter and in fair condition, with a few small fragments chipped away.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He requests him to have 'a warrant issued, in my favour, for a Buck from The New Forest, as soon after this letter reaches you, as may be convenient - and that you will give the instructions for its disposal'. He gives three numbered instructions regarding the warrant's packing and dispatch, adding 'going by the Luggage train is essential, in order that the expence may not be excessive'. In a postscript he asks that the buck be 'killed & dispatched ' when the weather is 'suitable'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with closed tears unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed to 'John Hunter Esqre | Auditor of Court of Sn.' Written three months before Jeffrey's death, the letter begins: 'My dear Hunter - I hope you do not think that I have been forgetful of you - or indifferent to your fortunes - or ungrateful for your very kind expressions - and I firmly believe feelings - towards me - because I may appear to have been slow in offering you my congratulations on your late appointment [as Auditor of the Court of Sessions]'.

Both items 1p., foolscap 8vo. Both in fair condition, on aged paper. ONE: Addressed to: 'John G. Cookman, Esqre. | Tintern, | Arthurstown | Via Waterford.' Acknowledging the receipt of Cookman's letters, with enclosures, 'offering yourself as a Candidate for the Post of [Resident Magistrate]'. TWO: Addressed to 'J. G. Cookman Esq | 112 Pembroke Road | Dublin'.

[1] + 111pp., 16mo. Unbound or lacking wraps (?). Aged and worn, with slight ink staining to title-page. The text is preceded by a full-page 'Prologo' from the publishers. No other copy traced on either Worldcat, COPAC, or PORBASE, and does not feature in the list of 'Later Editions' of the novel on pp.66-67 of A. T. Hazen's 1948 Walpole bibliography.

172pp., 16mo (10 x 6.5 cm.). In original green leather quarter-binding, with marbled endpapers and label on front cover: 'No 1 | DECEMBER | 1837 | 1838'. Aged and worn, with the contents of the volume detached from the binding, and the signatures loose through breaking of the stitching. In pencil beneath the binder's ticket on the front pastedown: 'Hogarth | 10 Powis Place', with this address continuing at the foot of the first page: 'Gt Ormond St'.

The two volumes contain transcriptions of a total of 65 original autograph poems, most of them unpublished, with extensive explanatory and biographical notes (sometimes running to several pages) composed especially for the recipient of the volumes, Mrs Ball of the City Hotel, Truro. In two uniform 4to notebooks with waxed black cloth bindings. The first volume is in fair condition, on aged and worn paper, in worn binding with loss of spine. The second volume has damp affecting the first 60pp., causing slight loss to text, and damage to the binding. ONE: On front free endpaper: 'Vol I.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightlhy-aged paper. In reply to a letter from the anonymous male recipient Legge writes: 'Mr. Russell was commanded to attend at Windsor Castle by the German Emperor with the approval of the King and though permission was afterwards given to publish the photograph you will readily see that no such statement as appeared should have been published without authority - incorrect as it was'.

116pp., 4to. Lots 2401 to 4510. In brown printed wraps with design including small illustration of Lowther Castle laid down on front cover. Aged and worn in like wraps. Clearly made out by a substantial bookseller (perhaps Quaritch, since the name does not appear in references). Inside the rear cover the following in pencil: 'Hotel Expenses £18/12/0 | Tips Hotel £2/15/- | Total Spent at Sale £2677/-/-', last figure being an enormous sum for the time. On the front cover a note has been made of three cash sums totalling '582 [pounds]'.

3pp., folio. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Bottle | Overseer | Leeds', with Maidstone postmark, and docketted 'Burr's Bill | £24 14s 8d'. In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper. Headed 'The Overseers of the Poor of Leeds'. Closely and neatly written, with the forty itemised entries going into unusual detail. The first entry, for 6s 8d, reads: '[April 1817] Att[endin]g. you on Stonham's Son in law hav[in]g. applied to a Magistrate for an Order for relief of his Grandchildren & aftwds upon the Magistrate with you & him & advis[in]g.

1p., 12mo. Good, on aged paper. The letter reads: 'The Dowr. Lady Sligo presents her Compliments to Mr. Shewell, & begs earnestly to solicit his Votes for Henry Jennings at the Election for the Idiot Asylum in April, 1854 - | Lady Sligo can recommend Henry Jennings as a member of a very poor & industrious family -'.

1p., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with Kirkaldy postmark, to 'Thos. Bywater Esq | Wemyss Castle | Kirkaldy'. Reads: 'I have your notice & meant to have sent you the Baln. of Rent tomorrow but the remittances I was counting on have not come forward today & I am going to Melrose fair tomorrow before Post time & wont be back till the end of the week but you may count upon it on Monday or Tuesday next week when I expect to be here again'.

1p., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Reads: Walmer Castle | Septr. 8 1839 | Henry | I beg that on receipt of this you will send off the Old Northampton Mare; and Young Copenhagen or any other that is in condition to travel & send as according to the Note, on the other side

&c W | Let them have Knee Caps'. 'Young Copenhagen' was named after Wellington's celebrated stallion Copenhagen (1808-1836), on whom he rode at the Battle of Waterloo.

Totalling 14pp., 12mo, and 7pp., 16mo. On seven bifoliums. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. The Kinrara letter, the only one addressed to Sir Edward Kerrison, has as letterhead a vignette captioned 'BOULOGNE | Laitières Milkwomen'; the Stoke Park letter on cream paper, the others on grey paper, with Landseer's letterhead, with antler motif, printed in red. The seven letters in an envelope with contemporary inscription: 'Letters from Sir Edwin Landseer'.

The note is 1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. It reads 'The C

and the Poneys and Poney Carriage and the Saddle Horses are to be in readiness & go tomorrow afternoon to Shooter's Hill | Dartford Halt 17th. | Rochester | Sittingborne Halt 18th. | Canterbury Halt 19 | Walmer Castle Halt 20th.' Pinned in the bottom right-hand corner, on a piece of 2.5 x 5.5 cm paper, is the autograph signature 'Wellington' cut from a letter.

3pp., 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, on aged paper. Her letter to him is 'the essence of sweetness': it has 'touched me deeply and will not soon be forgotten'. He supposes that she is unaware that 'Parratt and I travelled down to Windsor in the same train with you - indeed in the same carriage'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of grey paper mount adhering. Edwards writes that he has 'thought further over the Subject upon which you called the other day and have referred back to similar requests. The latter have been very numerous to write upon various subjects and have been uniformly declined'. Having made 'enquiries' with 'those who know', he is 'confirmed in the opinion that the Queen would prefer that the article you suggest upon H.M.'s godchildren should not be written'.

1p., 4to. Bifolium, with reverse of second leaf with Dover postmark, and addressed by Jones to 'Mr Norwood | to the left at the | Queen's head | Ashford Kent'. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter reads: 'Dover Castle Nov - 17 - 824 | Mr. Norwood | Sir | I beg to inform you I was arrested yesterday & sent to this place - My son in law & myself would have been up to have settled the rent, but now it must remain till I get out - I hope you will not let any one have, or touch the house. Mr.

1p., 16mo. Letterhead printed in green on green paper. In fair condition, on aged and dusty paper, with traces of pervious mount along one margin. The note reads: 'The Duke of Northumberland will take a copy of the History of Newcastle, as requested by Mr Robinson in his letter of the 17th., to be sent to Alnwick Castle - | April 20. 85.' The reference is presumably to Richard Welford's 'History of Newcastle and Gateshead', published in London by Walter Scott between 1884 and 1887.

The six items in good condition, lightly-aged and with slight rust spotting. Four of the letters concern an exhibition of the CUP's work at the Bumpus store, 350 Oxford Street. Lewis's four letters are all signed 'W. Lewis' and on his own CUP letterhead. One: 24 September 1931. 2pp., 8vo. In reply to Wilson's congratulations over the exhibition he informs him that he will be sending his son ('subject of course to your consent'), 'who has been in the printing [sic] now for two years and should know something of types.

Both letters in very good condition, and each in a stamped, postmarked envelope, and each addressed by Summerson to Cuddesdon Manor, Oxon. Letter One (2 May 1972): To Peter Rhodes. 2pp., 12mo. He is 'rather surprised' to find that the ruins of Soane's Piercefield House are 'still there!' The best he can do is 'to warn the National Monuments Record of the approaching dissolution'. They are 'seriously overworked but they might have a photographer in the area who would improve on Miss Stroud's snap-shots'.

Both letters in very good condition, and each in a stamped, postmarked envelope, and each addressed by Summerson to Cuddesdon Manor, Oxon. Letter One (2 May 1972): To Peter Rhodes. 2pp., 12mo. The collection is of great interest, providing a mass of information regarding the Victorian building trade. The owner of the volume, W. H. Dudley, would appear to be a War Office official, and, as described at the end of this entry, it contains manuscript details of two contracts. The ten printed schedules - totalling [34 + 17 + 14 + 10 + 12 + 13 + 12 + 10 + 16 + 11 =] 149 pp., folio - are uniform in design and format, bound together in a contemporary half-binding, with brown leather spine and corners, and marbled boards. All ten are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in worn binding.
