Prospectus for 'The Women's League of Health and Beauty | Object: Racial Health and Beauty', describing the 'Methods for 1932 and after' of this 'Sixpenny Health Movement'. With membership form, filled in by J. Bigg of New Southgate.
In its obituary of Prunella Stack the Guardian describes the League as 'the most innocuous of the interwar mass fitness movements': the present item would indicate otherwise. The prospectus is printed on both sides of a 25 x 31 cm. piece of shiny art paper, irregularly folded to make a 25 x 15 cm. front cover, flanked by two 25 x 7.5 cm flaps (with the front of one listing the members of the committee, and of the other the League's rules). The flaps fold back to contain the membership form, which is tipped in over the printed text on the reverse of the cover, which carries a photograph of a woman in balletic flight, with the motto 'Movement is Life'. Price 1d. On aged and worn paper, folded twice. The reverse of the cover of the prospectus carries a list - closely printed over fifty lines - of twelve 'Methods for 1932 and after | The Members of the Committee have adopted the following methods of achieving their ends . . . they are starting, | "A Sixpenny Health Movement."' The text is flanked by the reverses of the two side flaps, each of which carries comments on it. For example: 'Actually we are all suffering from a disease-ridden civilisation, and are at last becoming so conscious of the fact that the trend of modern medicine is more and more towards Prevention. But no scheme for prevention can be really effective unless it catches the interest and lights up the enthusiasm of women. Women are either the Race-makers, or the Race-breakers. Every human being has started life under some woman's care; they are the "architects of the future"; on them devolves the immense responsibility of racial health.' The membership form is on one side of a piece of 13 x 19.5 cm paper. It carries five promises, including '(2) I will spend at least 15 minutes per day, or 1 1/2 hours per week, on practical health-building in the body, such as walking, running, or sport, in the open air, or exercise indoors with windows open if possible.' Made out to 'J Bigg | 15 Marne Avenue | New Southgate. N11. | 27. 9. 32.' It carries the League's 'Paid' stamp.
