Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged watermarked laid paper. The 'Private Circular' is 4pp., 4to, in a bifolium. Contains a description by 'J. J. H.', beginning: 'At the suggestion of several friends interested in genealogical research, and with the assistance of Mr. F. A. Crisp, I have been induced to print a portion of my collections illustrating the last three generations of families resident in England and Wales. | The information now collected would in a few years' time be almost unattainable.' The final two pages carry a list of 'Pedigrees in Volumes I.

The first page, with 'Conditions' and details of publishers, is headed 'Donovan's British Quadrupeds; with coloured plates. | On the First of January will be published, | Part I. Price Nine Shillings; and Volume I. Price One Pound | Sixteen Shillings in Boards; | of | The Natural History of British Quadrupeds; | [...]'.

Beneath the heading on the first page is a list of around 75 princes, dukes and lords, headed by 'His Most Gracious Majesty the King', under whose 'immediate patronage' the work is to be commenced. Beneath this, in small type is the prospectus, stressing the 'immense Labour and Expense' attending the work (Lewis later claimed had taken six years to compile it, at an outlay of £48,000), which is to be 'published in Four Volumes Quarto - Price 30s.

Four pages, 8vo, bifolium, stab holes, formerly bound among advertising leaves of a periodical presumptively, wear and staining mainly to edges, but text clear and complete. The projectors (particularly James Mill, father of John Stuart Mill) "have long been of the opinion, that a publication devoted to the dissemination of liberal and useful knowledge, on a more comprehensive plan than any which has yet appeared [including] New Discoveries in the Arts and Sciences". No other hard copy of the item has been recorded. The periodical survived from 1830-1806.

Large (35 x 25 cm.) sumptuously-printed stitched pamphlet, in printed wraps. 16pp., with one additional collotype plate (stamped 'Specimen Colour Plate') and one tipped-in plate (of the binding), both coloured, and three full-page half-tone plates. Subscription form (The British Book Centre, Inc., New York), in red and black at rear. Aged and worn, with creasing to front cover. Includes three-page 'Commentary on a Unique Volume' by Winchester, and the first three pages of Wilson's text, two pages listing the contents, and specimen pages.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In very good condition. Covering the whole of the front page is a beautiful coloured illustration of the Imperial State Crown, with no text. The following three pages are printed in black and purple, with the second page carrying the publication details; the third page a full-page note from the editor; and the last page an advertisement for Sir John Wilson's 'Royal Philatelic Collection'. No copies of this item traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

20pp., 12mo. Stapled, in grey wraps, printed in purple and green. An interesting artifact indicative of women's growing economic power in Britain at the beginning of the nineteenth century. An elegant little production, including six full-page tables, 'Press Notices' (two pages, on inside covers) and a section of 'Other Features attaching to "The Business Woman's" Investment Policy', including 'Advances on House Property' and 'Temperance Section'. Scarce: no copies traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

2pp., 8vo, on a single leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. One side of the leaf is headed: 'For Three Half-Pence | Is now issued a Weekly Sheet, of Sixteen Pages, Super-royal Octavo, beautifully printed in Double Columns, entitled | The People's Journal: | An Illustrated Periodical for all Classes, | Edited by John Saunders.' The text in small print, is under the headings 'Plan', 'Objects', 'Means', 'Authors' [in three columns, including Miss Martineau, Miss Mitford, Walter Savage Landor, Ebenezer Elliott, 'J. R. Lowell (of America)', 'J. B.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with damage to two corners from removal from mount. Attractively printed in a restrained style, it gives the prices of proofs and prints, and boasts that 'The Picture, from which it is intended to take the present Engraving, has the reputation of being a STRIKING LIKENESS of the Poet, as he appeared in 1822, and is the last of any note or which he sat. It was moreover the favourite picture of his Lordship, as may be seen by the accompanying Fac-simile [not present] of one of his Lordship's Letters to Mr.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. The first page carries the 'pitch', beginning: 'AN HISTORICAL MAGAZINE has long been the great desideratum of our literature.' The author proceeds to claim that 'THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE has stepped forward to occupy this vacant post.' The page ends: 'Five numbers of the new undertaking are before the public, and present a fair example of what the work will henceforth be. The following important subjects have been treated of in some of the recent articles: -'.

ONE: Prospectus for the 'Church of England Public School & Training College'. 21pp., 12mo. Stitched. In blue card wraps, with the College's name printed in gold in a border on front cover. Printed on shiny art paper with four full-page illustrations: 'S. Mary's College' (frontispiece); 'College Hall'; 'The Kindergarten' and 'The Laboratory'. Good, on lightl-aged paper, in like wraps with creased back cover. TWO: Prospectus for the 'Training College for Secondary Teachers'. 7pp., 12mo. In blue card wraps, with the College's name printed in dark blue in a border on front cover.

The four items in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with rusted staples. All four with shelfmarks, stamps and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library, London. The three college reports, each dated in type at the end, are all 4to, with that of 1898 consisting of 8pp; 1899, 9pp; 1907, 14pp. In addition to the reports, all three carry lists of officers and other information.

In cream wraps printed in green. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Shelfmark, stamp and label of the Board of Education Reference Library. Can be roughly dated from the fact of the College's principal being Catherine I.

1p., 12mo. Attractively printed within a decorative border, on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir | The Specimen Book sent you herewith, of which I have much pleasure in asking your acceptance, contains a history of the Caslon Foundry printed with the justly celebrated types engraved by its founder in the early part of last Century.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. An interesting piece of ephemera relating to a ground-breaking series in the nineteenth-century extension of the market for serious literature. An initial 27-line prospectus in small print is followed by a list of the details of the 35 'Volumes already Published' and of 20 works 'in progress'. The final page carries details of items 'Uniform with his STANDARD LIBRARY, price 3s. 6d.', under the headings 'Bohn's Extra Volume', 'Bohn's Scientific Library, Vol. 1', 'Bohn's Antiquarian Library' and 'Bohn's Classical Library'.

2pp., 4to. On worn and aged paper, unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. The prospectus is on one side of the leaf, headed in capitals 'Money obtained by the sale of war savings certificates will be used by the Commonwealth for war purposes only.' The reverse carries the 'Form of Application for Commonwealth of Australia 4 1/2 Per Cent. 3 Years' War Savings Certificate.' The form has been completed and signed by Lieutenant J. Moss, at Selborne Chambers, Howard Street, Perth, with an application for £875.

In its obituary of Prunella Stack the Guardian describes the League as 'the most innocuous of the interwar mass fitness movements': the present item would indicate otherwise. The prospectus is printed on both sides of a 25 x 31 cm. piece of shiny art paper, irregularly folded to make a 25 x 15 cm. front cover, flanked by two 25 x 7.5 cm flaps (with the front of one listing the members of the committee, and of the other the League's rules).

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with closed tears along a central vertical fold. The first three pages carry 32 numbered rules, on the topics: Titles; Design; Management; Membership; Subscriptions; Benefits; Repayments; Funds; Disputes; Alteration of Rules; General. The last page carries three tables (first two regarding 'Ministers' and last on 'Widows & Orphans'), headed 'Schedule of Subscriptions and Payments'. Scarce: no copy located on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The Times of 12 October 1875 carries a report of the passing of the resolution by 'Rev. Mr.

2pp., 4to. On aged and stained paper. With good, finished engraving at head of first page, by 'R. T. Stocker, Delt.' from 'J. Cross. sc. 18 Holborn', depicting the house in its grounds, with children playing on its lawns. From the papers of F. A. Bulley of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. The First page is headed, in fancy type, 'ROYAL MEDICAL BENEVOLENT COLLEGE. | EPSOM.', beneath which is an engraving of the College. The prospectus is presented in the form of a letter, and is dated 'Febry. 1859' and signed (as a 'faithful fellow-laborer') by Propert in light-blue ink.

The six items from the Board of Education Reference Library, and variously bearing its stamp, shelfmarks and red label. The collection in fair condition, on aged and worn paper. The first two pages carry the 'Prospectus', beginning: 'NO Scientific subject can be so important to Man as that of his own life. No knowledge can be so incessantly appealed to by the incidents of the every day, as the knowledge of the processes by which he lives and acts. At every moment he is in danger of disobeying laws which, when disobeyed, may bring years of suffering, decline of powers, premature decay.

1p., 4to. Thirteen lines of text, daintily printed in small type. On lightly-aged and creased paper, with a number of short closed tears. Dated in print at the foot 'Castletown, Isle of Man, | 1847.' Beneath this De Renzy has written, in manuscript, '1st January, | [signed] George Webb De Renzy, Major | and Barrack-Master'.

The four prints are in good condition, on aged paper. Each of the four engravings is on india paper, laid down on a piece of good thick laid paper of dimensions 19.5 x 28 cm. Printed beneath each image is 'Photogravure R.
