11pp., 4to. Five are signed by Gustave Tuck, three by Desmond A. Tuck and one by Sir Reginald Tuck (the three men being named on the letterhead, together with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as the company's directors). Four are addressed to Adams personally, four to his firm (with one for the attention of 'Miss Dorothy Clarke'), and one to Bertram Adams, another royal photographer, with whom Adams shared premises at 43 Dover Street, Mayfair. The ornate letterhead, printed in brown, carries royal warrants and an engraving of Raphael House. On aged and worn paper, with slight damp staining. In a letter of 26 May 1930 Desmond Tuck writes, regarding a copyright infringement by a German company : 'We need scarcely say, that until this particular German Rattle was brought to our notice by you, we had not the faintest idea that our postcards of H.R.H. The Princess Elizabeth were being used in the manufacture of these Rattles. | We fully appreciate the displeasure caused to T.E.H. The Duke and Duchess of York through the retailing in this country of these Rattles, and the necessity of definnite restrictions being made as to conditions of re-sale of our postcards of Her Royal Highness, to avoid the possibility of any such unfortunate recurrence.' He ends by reproducing a statement regarding conditions of sale which is in future to be 'over-printed' on the firm's invoices for postcards. On 2 November 1928, on sending a cheque for £29 8s 0d for 'the Rights of reproducing as Postcards the 4 photographs of H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth', Reginald Tuck states: 'I trust that you will get the necessary permission for us to reproduce the 2 portraits of H.R.H. The Duchess of York and Princess Elizabeth, as I should like to bring these out at the same time as the other 4.' The letter also discusses 'Calendar Rights'. The subjects of the other letters are: 'small Gravures' of Adams's 'Photographs of H.R.H. The Duchess of York and Baby [the present queen], also one of H.R.H. The Duke of York [the future King George VI]'; fifty pounds for 'the Sole Rights to reproduce as POSTCARDS the three pictures of The Princess Elizabeth:- | 1) Princes Elizabeth, standing, profile. | 2) Princess Elizabeth, standing full face smiling. | 3) Princess Elizabeth sitting down, showing the whole of the figure with the exception of the legs.'; 'REAL PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARDS' of 'the photographs of H.R.H. THE DUCHESS OF YORK and PRINCESS ELIZABETH which appeared in today's press' (24 October 1928); £45 for 'the entire exclusive Postcard Rights of your new set of ROYAL PORTRAITS of The Duke and Duchess of York and the Royal Princesses'. A letter of 26 May 1933 is addressed to Bertram Park, regarding twenty-five guineas given for 'Exclusive Rights of Reproduction as CALENDARS and POSTCARDS of your photograph of Their Royal Highnesses THE PRINCE OF WALES, THE DUKE OF YORK, THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER and PRINCE GEORGE'.
