Autograph Letter Signed to unnamed male correspondent.
Banker and politician (1799-1873). 2 pages, 8vo. In good condition although somewhat creased and with some loss to one edge, affecting three words of text, and to one corner, not affecting text. The letter can be dated because Baring became a partner in the bank in 1828 and Lord Northesk died in 1831. 'Lord Northesk intends to propose to the Knights of the Bath, to appropriate the subscription for an entertainment to be given to the fashionable world on the occasion of their instalment, to charitable purposes. This I am happy to find is the disposition of the majority if not of the whole of the Knights. The sum is about £8000 and I have written to Lord Northesk strongly urging the application of the whole sum to the relief of the manufact, thereby converting the money, which if expended in entertainment would tend to encrease the distresses of the poor, to the alleviation of their sufferings, and I entertain great hopes that it will be so applied. If you meet on Saturday I hope you will take care to have a respectable & if possible a numerous meeting: and I beg the favor of you, should my Brother not be present, to put my name down for the same sum that you may think proper to subscribe for yourself.' Signed 'Thos Baring'.
