He thanks him for 'so kindly procuring permission to send me the Rules of the Order of Victoria & Albert for transmission to the King of Siam'. He asks 'what Foreign Orders are given to women', and would like to know how to 'get at the rules which give these'.

Both items 2pp., folio. Each on a separate leaf, the two leaves attached to one another by small gummed labels. Both items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: Signed by Woods. Announcing the appointment, and enclosing a warrant ('ordinary Member of the Military division of the Third Class, or Companions'. TWO: Signed by Cox. The word 'duplicate' in red ink at head of first page, but with Cox's genuine signature. Announcing the appointment, 'on the recommendation of Secretary Sir Michael Hicks Beach'.

Ballantyne's Famous Stories for Boys | The Copyright Edition', 'R. M. Ballantyne's Tales of Adventure', 'R. M. Ballantyne's Stories | Crown 8vo' and 'R. M. Ballantyne's Stories | Crown 8vo. Picture Cover'.

15 x 21 cm print laid down on 17.5 x 23.5 cm piece of card. Faded and aged, with wear to extremities of card (not print) and staining to reverse. The men are posing in four rows, in front of a large window in a brick wall. They are hatless, and wear single-breasted jackets with seven gilt buttons at the front, with black belt and metal buckle. Four numbers embroidered on either side of collars. In the centre of the group is a sergeant. Most of the men sport moustaches, and many pomaded hair and centre partings. 7pp., folio. On seven leaves of thick paper, stapled together. In fair condition, aged and worn. Annotated in grey and blue pencil. Ownership inscription at head: 'Mr. Mann'. Divided into subsections, with the main ones being the Distinguished Service Order; The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire; The Distinguished Service Cross; The Distinguished Flying Cross. Ten individuals receive the Military Cross, beginning with 'Major Thomas Scrymsoure-Steuart-Fothringham, The Black Watch'.

1p., 12mo. Cheaply printed in small print. A frail survival: aged and worn. In the 1885 General Election Brown was soundly defeated in the North Down constituency by the Conservative candidate Thomas Waring. The present item is headed 'The Burial of the Radical Cause in the Glassmoss. (By Robert Todd, Comber.)' The poem is 32 lines long, divided into eight four-line stanzas.

In good condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn black cloth, with large printed official 'NIGHT ORDER BOOK' label on front cover, to which Chambers has added 'Captain's' in large letters, and 'TO BE RETURNED TO MY CABIN'. Ruled pages, with printed 'NIGHT ORDER BOOK, H.M.S. [name of ship in manuscript] | ORDERS.' at head.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Written out in manuscript on lithographed letterhead headed 'Public Order Memorial'. Reads: 'Resolved | That after mature Consideration of the Circumstances which have occurred since the objects of the Committee were first promulgated, it is expedient that no further steps be taken in furtherance of the objects proposed, and that the Contributions already received of which Her Majesty and Members of the Royal Family have subscribed One Thousand Pounds be returned to the subscribers, the expenses incurred having been discharged by the Committee'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with one fold. Front page reads: 'St. Margaret, Westminster | A Memorial Service for Dorothy Leigh Sayers (Mrs. Atherton Fleming) M.A. (Oxon): Hon. D. Litt. (Durham) | Born 13th June, 1893 | Died 17th December, 1957 | on Wednesday, 15th January, 1958 at 12.30 p.m.' The lessons were read by Val Gielgud and His Honour Judge Gordon Clark. Scarce: no copies recorded on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

Full title: 'Memorandum for the Guidance of Officers commanding Units and of Officers in medical charge of effective Troops in areas or units, regarding the procedure to be followed in connection with admission to Hospitals, etc., and the care of Sick treated under unit arrangements.' 22pp., 12mo. He has always shrunk from 'giving advice to anyone concerning investments', but would consider 'the £10 shares of the London Necropolis Company at 7 1/2 as being safe to buy for investment.' He discusses the state of the company, and also suggests 'Japanese bonds'. TWO: 2 August 1905. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with short closed tears to a central crease. 'I am doing what I can to ensure the permanency of our work, but you are doubtless aware that the O.G.A.

The three items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE. Autograph Letter Signed from Haldane to Potter. Head Quarters, VI Corp; 11 August 1916. 1p., 4to. In a difficult hand. He apologises for having to 'depart so hurriedly'. 'I want to thank you for the very loyal way you helped me when I was in command of the 3 Division and express my thanks through you to Buchanan and Prideaux and of your staff.?>

The three items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. All three are 1p., 4to, and printed in purple on government 'S O | ABSORBENT' paper. Item One: Special Order of the Day, 11 November 1918. Signed in type at foot: 'J. BYNG, General, | Commanding Third Army.' It begins: 'The operations of the last three months have forced the enemy to sue for an armistice as a prelude to peace. | Your share in the consummation of this achievement is one that fills me with pride and admiration.

1p., 8vo. On yellow paper. On lightly-aged paper, with slight wear and creasing along one edge, and thin stub from previous mounting adhering to the reverse. The poem is twenty lines long, arranged in five stanzas, and signed at the foot 'George Steele Seymour'. Beneath this, in Seymour's hand: 'Special greetings to Mrs.

A change in the order of ceremony has been marked in red ink, and the section on the Seaforth Highlanders has been indicated in blue ink. From the papers of Regiment's Colonel, Maj.-Gen. Sir C. J. Mackenzie, KCB. A scarce piece of Scottish military ephemera: the only copies on COPAC and WorldCat are at Oxford and the National Library of Scotland.

1p., 12mo. On bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. In original stamped and postmarked envelope, initialed by Hardwick. In the letter Hardwick informs Baron that his 'History' (published in 1851) is out of print: 'The few remainders were sold about four years ago.' He recently saw a copy 'in one of hte Manchester second hand booksellers' catalogues on sale for 17/6'. He gives the names of two booksellers to approach ('Gray, 25, Cathedral Yard, or Sutton, Portland-st. Oxford st.') and is forwarding 'a circular respecting my forthcoming work' (not present).

9pp., 12mo. Unbound pamphlet of five leaves. Fair, on aged paper, with rust to staple. Gives the two pieces played 'Before the Service', 'The Sentences', 'The Lesson', 'Hymn', 'The Nunc Dimittis' and 'The Blessing'. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC at the British Library, with a further four copies on WorldCat.

Disbound, four pages, folio, aged but good, paginated [1]-4, but also numbered in MS. 95-98. The Trinitarian Order was created in France in the C12th to raise funds to ransom crusader and other Christians held by barbarians. This edict from Emperor Joseph II of Austria orders the suppression of this order and the confiscation of its property since the Order's original purpose was no longer valid.

Stapled pamphlet. 8vo, 27 pp, including full-page photograph of Mussolini embracing a man in Nazi uniform (Himmler?). Fair: internally clean and tight; some marking and wear to covers. Inscribed on title-page to 'Eric Underwood Esq with the sincere regards of Perry Belmont'. (Underwood is perhaps the English-born Australian nutritionist, 1905-1980.) Curious, digressive, energetic attack on fascism, with sections on the Teutonic Order, 'Oath-bound organisations' (Freemasonry) and 'Gangsters'.

8vo: 4 pp. Bifolium. 66 lines. Text clear and complete, on aged, spotted and worn paper. Letterhead with printed mottos in decorative borders: 'Total Abstinence is the only certain Preventive of, or Remedy for Intemperance.' and 'INDIVIDUAL ABSTINENCE. | STATE PROHIBITION.' In conclusion Gell apologises for 'what you no doubt will stigmatize as an absurd letter', and to the modern reader this item is certainly unintentionally-amusing. Since his correspondent 'went up', 'one of my Tasmanian friends along with Mrs.

Followed by (over five pages): 'SCHEDULE', consisting of 'Circuits of the Judges. Civil and Criminal.', 'Autumn Circuit. Criminal Business Only, except where otherwise stated.' and 'Easter Circuit.'

215pp., errata slip present,original plain boards, recently rebacked with new spine label, binding worn, contents foxed (mainly lightly, but a few concentrations) throughout but mainly good. Very scarce. No copy listed on WorldCat or COPAC, but the National Library of Ireland has three copies (one a second edition).

Very attractive production in original green cloth, and with dustwrapper. Two portraits of Frazer and fold-out facsimile of his writing and rear. Very good tight copy, although bumped at head of spine.

8vo (each leaf roughly foolscap) bifolium: 3 pp. Well printed on good thick watermarked laid paper. Good, though a little grubby and lightly creased. Thirty-five pieces of business (signed in type by 'CHARLES ABBOT, Speaker'), from the 'Strensham (Worcester) Inclosure Act Amendment' to the 'Irish Lunatic Poor Committee', followed by seven Notices of Motions, ten Orders of the Day and the second reading of a Private Bill ('Dublin Gas Light Bill').

Governor-General of Finland 1866-1881. In French, a large hand, but some hard to read (hence dots). Two pages, fomerly torn in four pieces, crudely sellotaped together, text clear and complete, as follows: "Le porteur de ces ligues, Monsieur Stepanof, dont je vous avais porte il y a et cela quelques mois, merite d'etre employe. Il est parfaitement recommande et [?] de l'experience en affaires. Son frere est membre de Comite [F...?] . . . Je crois vous rendre service . . ."

Clerk to the Privy Council (1794–1865) and noted diarist. Items clearly disbound from volume, with minute foliated '84'. The Order in Council is three pages, folio, on two leaves of gilt-edged laid paper. Good, though slightly discoloured, dusty at head, and with several closed tears and stab marks along one edge. Small square cut away from corner of second leaf (not affecting text). Entirely legible in a clear neat hand.

On piece of laid paper, dimensions roughly 7 1/2 inches by 6 inches. Browning, creased and discoloured, with some foxing and staining. Reads 'Sir | Pay Capt. Eliphalet Thorp Six hundred pounds - and charge the State . . . Pay Table Office March 6th 1780 | £600'. Signature of 'Saml written over those of two members of the Connecticut Pay Table, Finn Wadsworth and John Chenevard, and with 'John Lawrence Esqr- | Treasurer' in bottom left-hand corner. Docketed on reverse 'Dan Parmule' and 'No 3239 | Order | Capt. Eliphalet Thorp | £600 | March 6th. 1780'.

Banker and politician (1799-1873). 2 pages, 8vo. In good condition although somewhat creased and with some loss to one edge, affecting three words of text, and to one corner, not affecting text. The letter can be dated because Baring became a partner in the bank in 1828 and Lord Northesk died in 1831. 'Lord Northesk intends to propose to the Knights of the Bath, to appropriate the subscription for an entertainment to be given to the fashionable world on the occasion of their instalment, to charitable purposes.
