Motorcycle, motorboat and motorcar racer (1868-1940), leading figure in the motor business, 'in farming established the largest pedigree pig-breeding business in the United Kingdom [...] winner of many classic cycle races, the only British winner of the Gordon Bennett race, the International Harmsworth Motor Boat Trophy and the Championship of the Sea at Monaco [...] holder for over 17 years of 24 hours' motor-car record of 1581 miles' continuous driving, in this country, and then beaten by his own car' (Who's Who). Both items one page, quarto. Both in good condition though creased (particularly the carbon) and with a few closed tears. Both with pin holes to one corner. Letter, bearing R.S.A. stamp, signed 'S. Y. Edge'. 'I enclose a copy of a letter which I have today written to Mr. Thorne Baker, and should be very much obliged if you would kindly address the accompanying envelope containing the original copy of the letter, to Mr. Baker, as I do not happen to know his address.' Carbon requests 'full particulars in regard to installing an electrical device for experimenting with the growth of chickens which you referred to in your recent lecture at the Royal Society of Arts'. Asks for details 'of an installation for experimenting with pigs'. 'I would install it say for one or two styes just to experiment with.' He keeps 'very careful records of all these sorts of things', has 'very good buildings' etc, and would be willing to share his results.
