1p., 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly-aged. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Cathrall | Times Office | Manchester'. In reply to a letter 'requesting from me "an account of the origin and progress of the Manchester Agricultural Society"', he states that 'any information I possess is quite at Mr. Everett's service'. He suggests two times when Everett can call on him, and he will 'endeavour to promote his views in any way in my power'.

48pp., 8vo, disbound, sewing partly removed, foxing, ow fair. Copies at LOndon Library and two US libraries recorded only.

2pp., 4to. In good condition, lightly-aged, folded into packet. 34 lines of text. He begins by expressing his pleasure on Bateson's 'kind attention in naming me one of the God Fathers to your little Boy' [the future Conservative MP Robert Bateson (1816-1843)]. He next turns to the agricultural crisis: 'The accot. you give me of the state of the North of Ireland is very distressing under these circumstances. I feel no inclination to witness it by visiting my Estate there this Summer.

For more information on the Kauffman family, see Alexander Harris's 'Biographical History of Lancaster County' (1872), pp.332-335. The family were Mennonites, and originated in Hesse. The most notable member was affluent farmer and bank president Abraham Cassel Kauffman (1799-1886), a member of the Pennsylvania legislature for the 1835, 1837 and 1843 sessions. 18pp., 8vo. Unbound. 10pp.,, 8vo. On five leaves torn from a notebook. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper. A creditable effort, showing the influence of Gray's 'Elegy' and Goldsmith's 'Deserted Village', describing the unnamed farm hand's funeral, and reflecting on the virtues and hardships of the poor. Begins: 'From yonder peaceful and secluded dell, | Snug in the bosom of th'encircling hills, | The perfumed Zephyr bears a passing knell, | And melancholy o'er the Soul distils.

Printed in brown on one side of a 25 x 18.5 cm piece of cream paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. Beneath the heading is a 6 x 9 cm engraving of the machine, followed by twelve lines of description, and the prices for eleven different versions of the machine. The firms address is at the foot, with the printers' slug outside the border in the bottom right-hand corner. From the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

Printed on one side of a 25 x 20 cm piece of pink paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. With 6.5 x 15 cm engraved illustration of the trolley, carrying a sign for the 'WIMBLEDON LOCAL BOARD', followed by: 'Fitted with wood naves, Drabble's patent arms and boxes, with brass oil caps, springs, and cross check spring, oak frame-work, and strong elm boards in bottom.' Beneath this the prices and dimensions, and capacity of five sizes of the trolley, with 'Extras, if required' below. The firm's address is at the foot, with the printers' slug centred beneath this outside the border.

Printed in black on a 25 x 20 cm piece of grey paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. Beneath the title is a 5 x 11 cm engraving of the cart, followed by a seven-line description, and the prices for five sizes of the cart, with the capacity of each in gallons. The firm's address is at the foot, with the slug centred below it outside the border. From the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

20pp., small 4to. Stapled. Without wraps. From the Board of Education reference library, and with its shelfmark at foot of first page. Scarce: no copy at the British Library, and none on COPAC.

The manuscript material is on 109pp. of the 12mo printed diary. On aged paper, with manuscript entirely legible, but some staining to printed matter, in original worn calf binding. The manuscript paints a vivid picture of the life of a prosperous Georgian agriculturalist in all its aspects, from itemised financial accounts to country pastimes and the weather. It is presumably in the hand of George Pattison, whose name is given prominence among those of other members of the Pattison family written out over two pages at the rear of the volume.

1p., foolscap 8vo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Docketted with title and date on reverse. The list is headed: 'Decr. 9th 1796 Inventory of farming utensels [sic] at Dollar mains belonging to Mr Williamson'. Listing, in two columns, 46 items from '2 Carls | 1 Pair of Cart wheels' to 'about 1000 Stones of hay' and 'about 8 Balls of oats unthreshed'. At foot of page: 'NB A number of the above articles purchased since Capn.Williamson came to Dollar'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. 77 lines of text. In good condition, on aged paper, with a little wear and a few closed tears along folds. He begins by describing his 'prospects': 'My first year in Canada I stayed with Mr. Bridges, during which time I got a pretty fair knowledge of the country. I then decided to speculate on a woodland Lot of Fifty Acres, price Five Hundred Dollars.

The four letters total 76pp., 4to. In very good condition, neatly written on lightly-aged paper. All signed 'Paul' (two preceded by 'Your old brother'). Three of the letters are addressed to 'My dear Jens' and the other 'Skål, Frater Amantissime!' The second letter is addressed from 'The Bing House in which live Lyn Bing and Porg [sic] Bing, Vancouver, Canada'. Bing refers to the four letter as 'the 5th. of the Epistles', indicating that one is missing from the sequence.

1p., 8vo. Printed in blue on shiny art paper. In good condition, slightly-aged. Headed: 'Greenway Court, Hollingbourne, Kent', followed by a 7 x 10 cm photograph of the 'Dining Room, Greenway Court'. The text begins 'Miss Edith Bradley and Miss Baillie-Hamilton receive a few Resident Students at Greenway Court, to train for practical work in Dairy and Fruit Farming, Market Gardening and Bee Keeping.' Details of the 'complete course' are given, and of the fees. 'The Farm consists of Fifty Acres of Orchards, Pasture and Arable.

A total of 73 volumes of manuscript material, with a large number of printed and other items loosely inserted, compiled by the East Anglian farming family of John Feetham Gill (b. 1878; Hilgay, Norfolk) and his two sons George Frederick Gill (b. 1900; Littleport, Cambridgeshire) and Ernest Ralph Gill (b. 1909; Brockley, Suffolk). In good overall condition, on lightly-aged paper.

Having been expelled from the Communist Party in 1941, Driberg joined the Labour Party in 1945; he would be elected to the National Executive throughout 1949-72 and was chairman of the party in 1957-8. The collection is in fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with occasional minor rust staining from paperclips. ONE: Autograph Notes by Driberg of 'Bradwell local information'. 12pp., 12mo, on a total of eight leaves of House of Commons notepaper.

1p., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He writes that he has 'received the package containing the Cultivator up to the end of 1850', and that he will pay him after the Ohio State Board of Agriculture meeting on 13 February. He suggests exchanging 'he Western Agriculturalist with the Cultivator that year. 'It has, I presume, been sent to you by the publisher. The first number is not a fair specimen of what the work is intended to be, either in variety of matter, or in the style of mechanical execution; but hope the work will improve on acquaintance'.

1p., 4to. Bifolium. Good, on aged paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To | Mr. Strahan | His Majestys Printer. | New Street Shoe lane | Fetter lane'. The Earl writes that the letter will be delivered to Strahan by 'the young Farmer whom I mentioned to you'. He wishes 'that he may put his hand to work, and at the same time see things in the Stile of a man, who may have afterwards an Extensive Farm under his Direction'. He would like him to be 'recommended to Mr. Young, who will direct him what is proper to be done in Hertfordshire'. He asks Strahan to 'procure from Mr.

4to, 1 p. Twenty-six lines. Text clear and complete. On grey paper. Small spike hole. Aged and lightly-creased. Describes the 'forbodings' which have been realised following 'the heavy rains and floods of the previous Autumn'. 'From 2000 to 3000 Pockets have already come to Market, and these are making, in samples of Sussex £8 to £9, the Cut, and in Kents £8. 8/. to £10. 10/. to £12;- mouldy and blighted, much lower. | Nothing choice in East or Mid Kents has, as yet, made its appearance, [...]'.

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium. Twenty-one lines. Text clear and complete. On discoloured paper. Begins 'I think if you go into The Park at Hampton Court you will easily satisfy yourself that I am justified in withholding my consent to its being stript of its turf'. He considers that 'positive injury [will be] done to the Pasture', and as 'it is expected that we should maintain Deer to the number of 500. or more & that we endeavour to obtain from the feeding of Cattle some portion of the rent payable to Lady Bloomfield', consent cannot be given 'to diminish the food in the Park'.

[Note under title} "These are distributed, gratuitously, by the Writer to promote the great and important cause of National Agricultural Improvement." Pamphlet, sewn as issued, [16]pp., cr.8vo, some staining and aging fold marks, chipping, closed tear on first page, text complete. Ownership inscription, "R.L. Orlebar", member of the squirearchy. Obviously in a much expanded form, Mechi turned this material (14[2]pp.) into a full-scale book, published 1845 (London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans.

8vo: 6 pp. Stapled pamphlet. Text clear and complete. On aged and creased paper. For Wilson 'the most important aspect of the question' is 'the conversion of unsound country to sound country [...] It is a recent discovery, and, while ten or fifteen years ago one would have wiped the proposal before the House right off the slate, on the ground that the land is unsuitable for closer settlement, one to-day welcomes it.' Red-ink 1 cm accession stamp of the Webster Collection on reverse of blank final leaf, numbered 4188. No copy in the British Library, on COPAC, or on WorldCat.

On both sides of a folio leaf (dimensions 42 x 26.5 cm). On aged and lightly creased and spotted paper. Proposing to raise 'CAPITAL, £50,000, in 5,000 SHARES of £10 each.' Details of Directors; Bankers; Auditors; Brokers; Solicitors; Secretary, (pro tem.); and Offices left blank.

Motorcycle, motorboat and motorcar racer (1868-1940), leading figure in the motor business, 'in farming established the largest pedigree pig-breeding business in the United Kingdom [...] winner of many classic cycle races, the only British winner of the Gordon Bennett race, the International Harmsworth Motor Boat Trophy and the Championship of the Sea at Monaco [...] holder for over 17 years of 24 hours' motor-car record of 1581 miles' continuous driving, in this country, and then beaten by his own car' (Who's Who). Both items one page, quarto.

Four pages, 4to, fold marks, discoloration, some damage with minor loss of text.

Agricultural chemist (1876-1964). Both one page, quarto, and very good, though lightly creased. The letter carries a few light carbon-paper stains. The note informs the editor of the R.S.A. journal that Crowther is returning the 'corrected copy of my remarks in the discussion on my paper. | I presume that you will be sending me a supply of reprints when the Journal comes out'. The letter thanks the secretary for the copies of the journal.
