One page, 4to, good condition, discussing Claude and explaining the nature of the "Claude mirror" giving insights into his theory of painting. "You're quite right.: the 'Claude' mirror is a mirror of black glass - I suppose there's a tradition that Claude used something of this kind, but I rather doubt ir, as the effect of the 'Claude' mirror is to show nature in quite the opposite way to Claude[']s rendering of her - Claude, as you know, proceeded rather by uniting the lights (the effects one gets by opening the eyes wide in looking at things): the mirror by subtracting a certain amount of light from everything, unites the shadows & dark passages leaving the lights isolated. But its always pretty to see a lanscape in a dark mirror: it seems to bring it within the reach of the palette."
