2pp., folio. Tastefully printed in old-fashioned style on both sides of a sheet of thick wove 37 x 24.5 cm paper. Aged and worn, with chipping and closed tears to three edges. Inscribed by Mitchison at head of first page: 'Robert & Sylvia Lynd with best wishes from N. M. !' Twelve verses, followed by twelve pseud-scholarly 'Notes' (number 10 refers to a 'Prof. Bumpfendorf'). A topical political spoof, with the last verse reading: 'I'll sing you twelve, oh. | Pure Grow the Little Ones, | What is your twelve, oh? | Twelve for the twelve Departments | Eleven for the eleven that went up to millions | And Ten for the League of Nations | Nine for the nine bright Dailies | Eight for the eight bold Weeklies | Seven for the Censors under the Dail | And Six for the Sex proud Viri | Five for the Symbol at your Door | And Four for the Bye-law Breakers | Three, three for the Parties | Two, two for the Archbishops clothéd all in gaiters | Jix is Jix and all alone and ever more shall be so.' The longest note reads: '5. This is very obscure. It has been thought to refer to the publisher's trade mark on the back (or "door") of a book; or to the alleged sign on the door by which it was recognised in the early twentieth century, that a night club was not to be raided. Compare the Whitehall version: "Five for the Duty on your Clocks" (though this was more usually thirty than five); the Bow Street version: "Five for the Cuties in the Dock"; and finally, the Bloomsbury version: "Five for the Beetles in your Hats" - possibly referring to No. 12 above.' This item is excessively scarce: OCLC Worldcat only lists one copy, at the University of California, and COPAC lists none. Williams, Robinson and Mullan have this item as C180 in their provisional Mitchison biography, but provide no details, as they have not seen it (they write: 'Possibly printed as a broadsheet ???'). From the papers of Mitchison's close friend Sylvia Lynd.
