LABOUR

Heavily influenced by its author's own journalistic career, 'The Pen and the Sword' is not only of great significance in the development of Michael Foot's thinking, but is also an important work in the study of Jonathan Swift. The book was a firm success, going through four printings between 1957 and 2008. It was first published in London by Macgibbon and Kee, with the subtitle 'A Year in the Life of Jonathan Swift' (the year in question being 1710).

The collection is lightly-aged, but in good overall condition. It consists of five undated typescripts, twenty-four black and white photographs, and a few items of correspondence. The typescripts: ONE. Early draft of Longford's 1953 autobiography 'Born to Believe', published in 1953. 4to, 58 pp, paginated 1-55, 9A, 9B and 52A. Ends midway through Chapter 6. There are a number of autograph emendations, and the typescript exhibits differences from the published version. A second typed draft of half a page of text covers the earlier draft, which is still legible beneath.

2pp., 12mo. Printed on one side of a 25 x 31.5 cm piece of shiny paper, with a central vertical perforation line. Damp damage to the heading (with some loss of text), otherwise in good condition. The text, by Appleton, Bowerman and MacDonald, is on the left-hand page, and begins: 'Osborne Decision.

Postcard, 12 lines on one side, address on other. "I saw Galton F.W. Galton, sometime secretary to the Webbs] today, & he promised to put the pamphlet before his C[ommit]tee. He seemed to think that they would quite probably undertake the publication. I presume this would be acceptable in case no further progress has been made towards guarantee. He said they would not [underlined] subsidise publication by another body [...] a promising opening." Slater tarted the addess with "F.W." (crossed out) supporting identification of F.W. Galton.

Text begins: 'The Royal Commissioners for inquiring into the operation of the Factory and Workshops Acts have issued the following circular:- [...]'. The third page is headed 'LIST OF PUBLICATIONS relating to the Subject of this Paper, to be obtained at the Office of the Vigilance Association, 27, Great George Street, Westminster.' No copy traced.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium with drophead title. In fair condition, lightly-aged and worn, disbound with evidence of side stitching. No copy traced, either on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

1p., on 20.5 x 8.5 cm slip, headed by the Prime Minister's official letterhead. Sayer's apology is headed 'Mrs Attlee', and she writes that she feels she 'must apologise in writing for the mistake I made over the arrangements for giving your two seats to the Misses Trevor', hoping that it did not cause inconvenience and promising not to do the like again. Violet Attlee's reply, headed 'Miss Sayer', is at the head of the letter: 'Please don't worry. It is quite a relief to me to find that somebody besides myself makes mistakes! | W H A 30/3'.

16 ALsS, 2 TLsS, 1 ACS. Also included are a draft of Arthur's first letter to Harrison (see Item Twenty below), a photograph of Harrison and Mary S. Sims (Item Twenty-three), and two papers on workers' rights in China (Items Twenty-one and Twenty-two). The collection is in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Ten of the nineteen items are in their envelopes, addressed to Arthur at 59 Howard Rd, New Malden, Surrey, with three sent from on board ship (SS Aquitania, SS Mauretania and SS Berengaria). The letters total 43pp. (see each letter for format).

44pp., 12mo. Stapled pamphlet. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Beginning with the Prime Minister and Cabinet, before turning to the various departments. A significant artefact relating to a reforming government and an important period of British history. Present in runs held by various academic libraries, but copies of this individual issue are uncommon.

24 pp, folio, some leaves detached, interleaved with blotting paper, not bound, fair condition; a scrawl of a handwriting, difficult to read. It starts with the date, 9 April 1823, Easter Sessions, two names of people who "qualified as magistrates", "The Revd R.P.B.

The 'Majority Report' section under the following main headings: Origin and Course of Inquiry; General Results of the Investigation; Remedies and Recommendations; Summary of Recommendations and Conclusions. A large part of the document discusses 'Street Trading'.

Twelve unpaginated pages,19.5 x 9 cm. Stitched into printed card wraps. Printed on shiny art paper, with a full-page reproduction of a caricature from Vanity Fair, and a half-page reproduction of a cartoon from the Daily Despatch. Beginning with the lyrics of 'Annie Laurie' and ending with those of 'England, Arise', 'Sons of Labour' and 'The Red Flag', and including 'A Reminiscence and a Welcome' (three pages) and 'From Pit to Parliament' (two pages). Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at the National Library of Scotland.

Written in pencil on a neat small official 'POST CARD', printed with stamp and bearing a Glasgow postmark. In good condition, lightly aged. 'Dear Mr Gimson | I am sorry to say I have so much work that I do not like to undertake any lecture at Leicester this year. Please excuse me this time'. Gimson was president of the Leicester Secular Society and brother of Ernest Gimson (1864-1919), arts and crafts architect and furniture designer.

8pp., 4to. On eight leaves pinned together. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with rust staining from pin. Apparently unpublished. Typed at head of first page: 'From J. H. Driberg, 19, Dryden Chambers, W.1.', above which, in manuscript: 'NL. N. 10 pt Miscellany'. Driberg is clearly the author: 'Anyanga' is a surname common in the area of Kenya in which he was based as a colonial offical. The first paragraph gives an indication of the tone of the piece: 'The War left me with one fragrant memory. Her name was Yvonne Beaubouchais, and the date was 1915.

The nine large prints are in good condition, lightly-aged with slight wear to corners. The smaller print is lightly-creased. In worn blue faux-leather album, with large facsimile signature of 'Lenare' on cover in gilt, with the address 'Portraiture | 28, GEORGE STREET | HANOVER SQUARE | LONDON, W.1.' ONE to FOUR. A series of four head-and-shoulders portraits of Driberg, each signed in pencil by Maurice Beck, and with the stamp on the reverse: 'Photograph by | Maurice Beck | F.R.P.S.' Each on a piece of 37 x 29.5 cm.

Black and white portrait of Driberg from the waist up, by Converse Studios Inc., New York. In good condition, in lightly-worn printed card folder, 35 x 25.5 cm. The image is mounted behind a 23.5 x 18 cm windowpane. Driberg, in his early thirties, in a double-breasted pin-striped suit, white shirt, and tie, faces the camera with hands in pockets. 2pp., folio. Tastefully printed in old-fashioned style on both sides of a sheet of thick wove 37 x 24.5 cm paper. Aged and worn, with chipping and closed tears to three edges. Inscribed by Mitchison at head of first page: 'Robert & Sylvia Lynd with best wishes from N. M. !' Twelve verses, followed by twelve pseud-scholarly 'Notes' (number 10 refers to a 'Prof. Bumpfendorf'). A topical political spoof, with the last verse reading: 'I'll sing you twelve, oh. | Pure Grow the Little Ones, | What is your twelve, oh?
