The handbill on the recto of the first leaf (headed 'The Lant Street Sunday Schools. | (In the Lower and Upper Rooms of the same buildings.)') and verso of the second leaf (headed 'The Lant Street Ragged Schools | For Boys and Girls, | Borough, Southwark. (Established A.D. 1862, and continued in active operation.)') of a 12mo bifiolium, with Newton's letter on the recto of the second leaf. Docketed on reverse of the first leaf. Texts clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Giving names and addresses of the seven-man committee, and 'Return for the Sabbath-day, March 31, 1867', showing '673 attendances of Boys and Girls'. Docketed by Newton on one page 'Dinners have been given to 200 children weekly during the winter', and on the other page '1. Free Church & its Charities | 2. Ragged Schools, Male & Female | 3. Free Night Schools & Sunday Schools'. The letter, of 18 lines, discusses the collection of the subscription of 'Mr. Peet', and invites the unnamed male recipient to read over 'the statement shewing not only a great moral benefit, but material to property in the neighbourhood - the present Lant St becoming in time like Mint St'. Newton was a poet as well as cleric, his 'Triumph of Israel' being reprinted after his death.
