Pusey and othersEdward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882), Church of England clergyman, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Christ Church, Oxford [Francis Richard Wegg-Prosser [ne Haggitt] (1824-1911), founder of Belmont Abbey] With: a collection of letters on the same or similar subjects from various clergymen to Wegg-Prosser, converted to the Catholic Church.[Pusey] Six Autograph Letters Signed ('E B Pusey' and 'E B P') to Francis Richard Wegg-Prosser ('W. P.'), discussing his conversion to Roman Catholicism [conversion 1852].

The text is engraved in copperplate on one side of a piece of card, with plan on reverse of the the premises at 18 Paternoster Square, with Newgate Street, Warwick Lane, Rose Street and Paternoster Row also shown. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with unobtrusive vertical crease. A nice piece of nineteenth-century London book trade ephemera. The text reads: 'Publication Committee | Presbyterian Church of England, | 18 Paternoster Square.

[4]pages, 8vo, grubby and foxed, last page (blank) with vestiges of glue from being laid down in album. A note is printed at the end, "Young Men, who may receive or read this paper, are affectionately invited to the Bible Classes of the Young Men's Christian Association [...] | W. Edwyn Shipton" (venues given). No other copy traced - COPAC lists another series of the same name only (published by Nisbet). Discussion of Jesus Christ, using metaphor of a river.

The last page carries three tables (first two regarding 'Ministers' and last on 'Widows & Orphans'), headed 'Schedule of Subscriptions and Payments'. Scarce: no copy located on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The Times of 12 October 1875 carries a report of the passing of the resolution by 'Rev. Mr.

Two pages, 12mo, good condition. I have just sent off by rail folios 1-24 of Isaiah, to middle of Chap. xiv, though I hardly expect you will be able to make much progress with that book at your next meeting. It is interesting work, but will not be huried. | I have also enclosed a copy of my 'Proleomena' (25 copies printed separately from the Hexapla) for your kind acceptance as the Fascicules (which will include it) may not be out for some weeks, though quite out of my hands.

The three items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, the second letter having a few very short closed tears on fold lines. The first two signed 'W F Hook' and the third 'Walter Farquhar Hook'. ONE (26 July 1828): 2pp., 12mo. Apologising because 'waiting upon' the Corries will now be impossible, as 'Sir Robert and Lady Wilmot intend to come on a Visit': His Mother will not be able to see Sir Robert, so Hook will be 'compelled to stay at home to entertain him'. TWO (16 April 1829): 2pp., 4to. On gilt-edged bifolium.

312pp., large 8vo. In publisher's green cloth binding, gilt. Internally good, sound and tight on lightly-aged paper; in worn binding. Each volume carries two pages of advertisements, with more in text. The earliest issue is typical, with articles on such subjects as reincarnation; prophecy; occult timepieces; occult uses of colours (by Professor G. R. Nile). An advertisement on p.2 of the earliest issue gives the magazine's view of itself: 'THE STAR OF THE MAGI IS THE LEADING OCCULT JOURNAL OF THE WORLD. A year's trial will convince you of this.

Cross-interrogatories: 5pp., 4to. On two bifoliums of grey paper, stitched one inside the other. In very good condition, lightly-aged.

Six pages, 12mo, closely written, fold marks, good condition. "[...] on Obeah as practised in Demerara, I have exceedingly little information to give, having had but little personal contact with it and only knowing it as a thing much talked about and I believe, largely made use of by the black people. It is no uncommon thing for a person bearing ill will towards another to resort to an Obeah man in order that he may work them some harm.

Corrie was the son of Rev. Josiah Corrie (1725-1800) of Kenilworth. He was educated at Daventry Academy and New College, Hackney. He was a schoolmaster and a Unitarian minister at the Old Meeting House (1817-19), and president of the Birmingham Philosophical Society, to which, in 1819, he introduced Maria Edgeworth, who notes in a letter her admiration for his 'very agreeable benevolent countenance, most agreeable voice'. In William Field's memoir of Dr Samuel Parr he is numbered among the 'clerical friends' in whose company Parr 'delighted'.

1p., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed, with Penny Red stamp, postmark and seal in red wax, to Wiseman at 8 York Place, Portman Square. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-creased paper. The firm is writing at 'the special request of Miss Ellen Antonia Teresa Ann Garbayo, at present risiding abroad [...] It appears that the above Lady is desirous of contacting marriage, but cannot do so without the production of her Baptismal Certificate. She states that she was baptised about the year 1827, by a Doctr. Moore of St. Patrick's Church London'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper. The letter reads: 'At the earnest entreaty of a valued friend, I take the liberty of soliciting your vote & interest, if not pre-engaged, on behalf of a Child, whose card is enclosed. It seems, as every such case must needs be, a subject of great distress.' Institutions such as the London Orphan Asylum submitted regular printed 'Polling-lists' of deserving children, for notables such as the Duke of Wellington to vote on for the 'election'.

32pp., 4to, typescript (carbon copy), some closed tears, but text complete and clear, minor corrections and additions in manuscript, partly detached from paper binding, itself grubby and with minor damage, rusted staples. A well-written and entertaining account of a Mission to Sydney, describing events, scenery, activities etc, "The suggestion of a Mission Tour to Sydney and Singleton came from within the Melbourne Band Circle [...]".

1p., 4to. Crisply printed with black border. In fair condition, on aged paper, with traces of glue from mount on reverse causing slight discoloration and ruckling. The three hymns are headed: 'After the reading of the Scriptures and Prayer.' (first line of hymn: 'WHY do we mourn departing friends'); 'At the Vault' (first line of hymn: 'UNVEIL thy bosom, faithful tomb,'); 'Before the Benediction' (first line of hymn: 'Farewell, dear saint, a short adieu!' No copy located on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

Good condition. Paper Boards. A difficult hand. Diary entries variable in length, many full, some days blank. The Diaries chronicle his life at the Church of Holy Trinity (in.c football for Coventry City and Stoke), and the years (some First World War) serving his father-in-law, the Bishop of Truro. Subjects: [1904] services; journeys; preaching; litany; helping parishioner write letter; sermons; finances; schools; dinners; meetings; asked to play for Coventry City (1904", 'to raise tone of the team'); travels - mainly local (walking distance to Stoke, Rugby etc - initially c.

The three items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter is 6pp., 4to, with emendations and deletions, and marked by Hodson 'Copy' at the head of the first page. In envelope annotated by Hodson: 'Copy of a letter to Lt. Col. P. Lyttleton Gell, J.P. | The Catholic Revival. In order to make his point of view clear, he begins by stating: 'I may say that I was born in London & my mother took me to such churches as S. Alban's Holborn, S. Michael's Shoreditch, All Saints, Margaret St.

The three items on 12mo bifoliums, and totalling 9pp., 12mo. All three in good condition, on lightly aged paper. The first and last letters in envelopes, with stamps and postmarks, addressed to Hodson at Compton Hall, with the third forwarded to North Wales. ONE (1 August 1898): 2 pp., 12mo. The college authorities have instructed Faning to thank Hodson for his 'kind offer to lend them the "Chapel piece" of your Tapestry and to say that they will be glad to avail themselves of it in October.

1p., 4to. In good condition, on a lightly aged and worn leaf removed from an album. The poem is twenty lines long, arranged in five four-line stanzas. The first stanza reads 'Dear Sister, Christian Heroine! | Stranger to me thy form & voice - | I venerate that zeal of thine, | And while I blush, for thee rejoice'. The second stanza is somewhat heretical: 'Nor Male nor Female is in Him | Who Born of Woman, both hath sav'd: | She conquers every terror grim, - | She thousand deaths for Him has brav'd!' The third stanza begins: '"A woman slew him:" Gideon'ss son'.

On a 4to leaf removed from an album, with Bennett's piece on one side of the leaf, and Gray's on the other. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with a short closed tear to the fore-edge. Bennett's note reads: 'Dearest Brethren, ye know how that a good while ago, God made desire among us, that the Gentiles, from my mouth, should hear the word of the Gospel & believe. And God, who knoweth the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us: put no difference between us & them, purifying their hearts, by faith'.

1p., 12mo. On bifolium. Written in a faint, difficult hand, as one might expect from a ninety-six year-old. 'The President of Magdalen presents his Compliments to Mr Twining, and thanks his kind present of the portrait of his learned Uncle, author of one of the best translations into the English language of a great writer. 2pp., 4to. 29 lines, in a neat calligraphic hand. In good condition, on lightly-aged laid paper. The document is signed 'Giovanni Soglia' and begins: 'Dal Sig. Dotte. Galeati ho ricevuto il fatto informativo della Causa già agitata fra il Sacerde. Francesco Gardi di Lugo, il Sig. Antonio Fornioni, e la Mensa Vescovile d'Imola; qual causa, atttesa la difformità delle due sentenze già pronunciate, si vorrebbe portare al Tribunale della Sac.

12mo, 48 pp. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Rebound in the twentieth century in worn workmanlike blue wraps, with the outer edges of the pamphlet rounded off. The text of the work covers pp.3-40; with the 'Brief Account' on pp.41-48. A scarce piece of provincial printing: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC, and the only copy on WorldCat at the New York Public Library.

Chapbook, 32pp., 16mo, blue paper wraps, poor condition (worn, stained, partly detached), some names of former (young) owners (mainly Master George Creed) crudely written on inside cover (missing front ep?) and back ep recto. There is a note on p.[3], implying an earlier edition, "The only abridgment in this edition is a few lines, recommending the formation of Plain Dress Societies in America." However, COPAC records only one copy Bodley, imprint Bristol 1840).

As 'Archdeacon Manning was unable to call in Clifford street' on the previous Saturday, he would like 'Messrs Stulz to finish his frock coat, & to send it to 22 Tavistock Square, not to be forwarded.'
